I am possibly the only person alive who doesn't find that movie uplifting. I think its the fact that the fate worse than death for George's sweetie was to become a spinster librarian :-/
It's weird - I'd never seen it before but it was amazingly familiar to me because of how many times I've seen clips/seen it described/read stories based around it.
I have also never seen the first (released) Star Wars film in one sitting, but I have seen enough clips to know the story relatively well.
Not watching it in one sitting is through choice; I vaguely recall being exposed to the film as a child and finding silly the idea of a bipedal, ambulant, bear-like creature who appeared to understand human speech. (Although my ~10 year old brain didn't use those words ;-)
Why this didn't extend to disinterest of numerous cartoons or of ET (which I found endearing - yes, I cried), I don't know. Ones tastes are seldom rational, and analysing them insanely difficult.
