1. Alan Rickman isn't really Snape. He's a fantastic actor, and I really enjoy his portrayal of Snape, and... that *voice*... but he's probably not the best choice for the role. He's too old, he's not greasy enough, and his "anger" tends toward the quietly threatening rather than the homicidal rage. Plus, if a younger actor had been cast, we could've had David Wenham as Lupin. *g*

2. Lupin is, I fear, in danger of turning into a big ol' sap. I am watching JKR very carefully, with my ruler poised ready to give her a sharp rap over the knuckles. He's far too understanding, and becoming a shoulder to cry on- I'd like to see more of the wolf in his character. Just 'cos he's English, polite, and likes tea, doesn't mean he has to be a big nancy. Look at Giles!

3. I really don't like Tonks all that much. She just seems far too much like a Mary Sue. You have the weird power no one else has got (neatly encapsulating the odd-coloured hair and eyes thing), you've got endearing clumsiness, you've got the fact that she's the only youngish, attractive female... I don't know. I'm not interested. However, despite my distinct lack of love for OOC-ness, I feel she's a character that has been redeemed to an extent in fandom, by folks such as [livejournal.com profile] lamardeuse and [livejournal.com profile] copperbadge.

4. I wasn't overly bothered that they left Peeves out of the film. I was far *far* more bothered by the bastardisation of the Bloody Baron. He was supposed to be *scary*, not a laughing fool!

5. I love to be squicked, but my definition of squick is far different from the generally accepted one, I think. I love something that'll make me screw up my nose, cause an involuntary "Eeeeeew!", make me giggle. I don't consider subjects such as incest or noncon to be squick, I consider them to be NO GO AREAS.

6. The Weasley twins are *not* fucking. My own personal theory is that George wants Harry, but that's beside the point. I do *not* like incest. I really don't understand why anyone else would, though I'm not going to judge anyone for it. I will accept cousins (like Merry/Pippin), but I don't think there's anything hot about sex with immediate family.

7. I have nothing against songfics. I don't think people should use the entire set of lyrics from a song as an excuse not to come up with a plot, nor have the characters quote songs extensively to save themselves from having to come up with dialogue. However, I think that choosing a fic that quotes poetry as inspiration over one that quotes a song is needless quibbling over semantics.

8. I hate the idea of intellislash, from what I understand of it. However, I don't know enough about it to make an informed decision, so I won't be drawn into discussion about this one, for fear of causing offense.

9. I'm not interested in PWPs. In the hands of a decent writer I *will* read them, but I'd much rather find a story with plot. I get far more out of a long slow build up followed by a well written kiss than I do out of pages of thrusting and moaning and such.

10. I don't want Sam's babies. I *fear* Sam's babies.

Wow...I don't think I even *have* ten opinions regarding fandom :-P

Just out of curiosity, what's 'intellislash'? The 'intelli-' part makes me suspect I'm rather stupid for not knowing. *blush*

Intellislash is something that was a big furore a while ago, as I understand it. I really am not the best person to ask; to tell you the truth, I don't wanna say anything in case I get people's backs up and get it entirely wrong, anyway. *g*

Disclaimer: I'm not connected with it in any way, shape or form (heck, i don't even write hp and started reading it *long* after all that crap went down) but here are some links: a definition (http://www.livejournal.com/users/sangredulce/16504.html?thread=152184#t152184), some (eh..frustrated) comments (http://www.livejournal.com/talkread.bml?journal=penelope_z&itemid=105708), some more (http://www.livejournal.com/users/tradescant/72044.html), and here's the other side (http://www.livejournal.com/talkread.bml?journal=flourish&itemid=76472) with some more links.

Nny's refusal to tell me intrigued me enough to run it through Google, but thanks for the links as well. I'm constantly amazed by the big brujajahs that go on without my notice. I've been writing HP for years, and I'm only now realizing (from frequenting fandom_wank) that I'm not really involved in the mainstream fandom at all.

*snicker* And according the Intelliarchive, I "emulate" their style. This amuses me.

You know, I think I like my dark little corner of web. To make a pointlessly fangirlish analogy, I'd rather be in my cupboard under the stairs with my Hogwarts letter than in Dudley's second bedroom without it :-P

sorry nny for intruding yet again

you're welcome...hp is about as wankerish as it comes (which was actually a big reason for me to hold out as long as i did before checking it out :-)...it's not a happy place when you're a bnf around here apparently, so i'm with you in the cupboard :-) (<-- sorry, that came out slashier than intended :-)

Nice meeting you :-)

I honestly didn't know that HP was so wanky until recently. I wrote my first HP fic the day that GoF came out - and it was Snapledore. Thus, the first folks I met in fandom were those who were cool with that - mostly the more mature readers and writers - so I never really got into the "mainstream slash" world (and there's an oxymoron for you.)

Oh well, there's plenty of room for a party in my cupboard :-)

Regarding the quibbler post, I think that got deleted since they're now taking votes on the whole domain/message board idea. A message board seems to be the popular choice at the moment, so I think we'd get the same "category" deal going on there. So that's good. HP is just a huge fandom to be doing recs in :-P

I don't think I'm all that excited about this entire idea any more...it just seems too geared toward reconfirming the names we all know already and i don't see folks criticizing their friends' fics publically...Pluis I don't think I'll go on any message boards any time soon...well...I've enough on my plate without this...just had to take the chance to vote no for a fic that's been bugging me forever (and that almost made me leave hp as soon as i joined it)

snapledore...well...*tries really hard to be polite and refrain from shuddering *g*...well i did read a couple that were...interesting... love the mainstream slash concept...though i really think there's something to it, b/c i read a lot of teenie harry/draco the same way i used to read angel/buffy het...it's all about the big love and the soul mates forever...only now it's cool to do it with the gay (in my other current fandom of choice it's all about the joshtin...and if you don't get the reference...well, good for you :-)

Re: quibbler - I think I'll stick around to make sure some of my rarer favourites get properly pimped. Can't let the snapledore, snilch, and snagrid get lost in the shuffle ;-)

And speaking of snapledore, I know it's not everyone's cup of tea...but don't I remember you saying that one of mine wasn't so bad? Might have been "Winter Kept Us Warm"? I admit, when I first got into fanfic (age 12 or so) I was much into the "big love and soul mates forever" but I'm a jaded little creature, and by the time I started writing HP at sixteen my tastes had much changed. I don't read much fic with the younger characters now unless it's by an author I know, or it's been recced by someone whose tastes are in sympatico with mine.

*shrug* To each his/her/its own :-)

i did..i did...oscillates between being excited that i apparently said sth nice about your fic and you actually heard about it (where? how? i'm horrid with feedback and my lj is flocked) and utter embarrassment that i didn't make the connection right away...

yes, liked that one a lot actually (one of the few i alluded to above :-)

12-16-omg just put me in the old folks home now :-) but yes, i think the true love thing is both a new fan and definitely a young girl thing...some of us grow up :-)

I think I remember it from...Isis's journal? I remember being quite pleased that she'd liked something of mine, because she's not usually into the Snapledore. Your redheaded icon stuck with me for some reason.

You know, I'm totally embarrassed by the stories I thought were good when I was twelve. I started off in the X-Men fandom, and the Mary Sues...Of course, it was when I started to realize that some of them were bad that I thought: Hm...maybe I can do better. And thus a life-consuming obsession was borne :-P

and yes, i shudder to think back on the stuff i read when i first discovered fandom (and i didn'thave the excuse of being 12...i was a grown woman finishing my lit diss :-)

Since I personally got into fanfic through X-Files, specifically Mulder/Krycek, I've never been much of one for the Tru Wuv type of fics. If there isn't a big dollop o' angst about, I'm really not interested. I look for writing with a decent plot, good characterisation, and a long slow build up. Unfortunately, I cannot write that, so I get discouraged. *g* But yeah- much prefer fic with the older characters, and generally written by more mature writers, also. Age has nothing to do with it, there. :)

From: [identity profile] atdelphi.livejournal.com
Oh, I'm all about the angst now...that newest by Switchknife? I had an interesting moment of confusion when I realized that I consider that a happy ending.

More than just preferring fic about older characters, I have a relative obsession with those characters that are considered unnatractive or non-sexual (Dumbledore, Filch, Snape, Hagrid, McGonagall.) Every human being is a sexual creature, and I find examinations of the least obviously sexual people to be the most interesting.

But then, I'm an odd little bird ;-)

NO! NO SKINNER!

*snickers*

I have a real problem with Skinnerfic. I'm sorry. I used to enjoy fics by people like Aries- plenty of angst and slush, but eventually they grated because they really were too OOC. Krycek was never gonna be self-sacrificing and nice.

The ones I wrote in the fandom were absolutely hideous; I only like one of them now.

well, it's all where you start...my first fics where xanthe's stuff...all mulder/skinner all the time...so even when i discover the ratboy love, i still didn't mind the skinner...

and yes, aries...memories...i think the ueberschmoop became a problem for me after a while...wasn't that Krycek rentboy fic one of hers? Loved it...and then the sequel..hm... Yeah, lots of OOC, but if the writing is good, I don't mind it all the time...like Josan, for example.

friended you and atdelphi btw, b/c i did have to flock my lj and feel like such a pretentious bitch for it :-)

Thanks for the friending! I'm actually a big fan of Josan's stuff. It's like hot chocolate - a sweet warm pleasure at the end of a long day. Love her Krycek/Skinner fics and the Krycek/OMCs. She's got some great HP stories as well. And she's written Snapledore, which makes her O-K in my books ;-)

I do love her stories, but there are often a few too many spelling/grammar errors that make me cringe, and I really find it difficult to read stories like that. I really *hate* that about myself, because I know I'm missing out on some great fic that way.

I can't remember my favourite XF writers any more. That's really sad... I'll have to go look at RatB again. *g*

yes...but i always end the story thinking...now who was that big bald guy??? no, i do love her, but i remember that russian fic and the cabin stuff and the great stories that to me had little to do with XF...in a way, the snape/omc long one is similar...wonderfully written and characterized, but it's like she takes this one guy and then runs with him and canon be darned becomes unimportant...

Josan's my standby for h/c. If I want spot-on characterization and canon, I know other authors who can just make me ache with what should surely be Book Six, slash and all ;-)

And I'll admit, when I've had a rough day, I have a soft spot for that rather cuddly Skinner who gives Krycek a happy enough ending. Totally off on a tangent, but earlier today I was amused to find out that the building my French teacher's office is in (I go to UBC) is indeed the FBI building from X-Files. I thought it looked familiar :-P

Oh, and Nny was right - I was happier before I knew what "intellislash" is. I think I'll stick with my original categories: Great Writing, Good Writing, Mediocre Writing, and Piss-Poor Writing.

told you you didn't wanna know :-) from what i can tell, it was a small kerfuffle turned bad joke turned big kerfuffle...some of the fic is really good and i think that entire argument needs to be historicized anyway...but looking at the web site now without the context it seems bizarre...

To be fair, I'm a frosh from Ontario, last of the Grade 13s, so I'm 19, not 18. If that helps.

And I'm definitely loving the west coast. I was born in Northern Ontario, not far from the arctic (which is just mindboggling weather) and grew up with the smoggy humidity of Southern Ontario. So having the Pacific Ocean literally right outside my window (complete with nude beach) is a very cool thing indeed ;-)

I think I'll be sticking around Vancouver until I graduate (as daunting as the idea of staying in one place for five or six years is.) I'm currently amazed to be in the latter half of November without seeing a single snowflake :-)
