Presumption of American Culture = All Culture, which happens a lot in various areas of the blogosphere. In this instance, the "no bragging/acknowledgement of own abilities" thing is gendered in the US, I assume, but in the UK especially it's just universal. Declaring yourself to be good at something is considered very crass and arrogant regardless of your sex. [I probably wouldn't have noticed this if I hadn't just finished rereading Watching The English's work-related chapter]. So when someone says "I'm Kate Fucking Harding", you either assume she's being sarcastic/hyperbolic for humorous and self-derprecating effect, or you have sympathetic cringing because someone just broke a major social taboo.
