IT'S OKAY. Mostly it will be writing film reviews, the practicality of which I am SO fine with. Just... fucking Twilight, man.

Its for eighth graders, right? Aren't those kids still a little young to be reading Twilight? IDK SCHOOL PEOPLE, YOUR FAIL IS EPIC.

Okay, that makes me feel a little better. I just think on the Bella-giving-birth scene and CRINGE when I think eighth graders are reading it. though they are.

THIS WORLD. PAIN IN MY BRAIN.

Hey, it's a fantastic opportunity to point out some of the more dubious aspects of it to people who might not have noticed otherwise!

Problematic, though, in that I haven't read it or anything... ah well. It's mostly a film review, which I can teach the writing of standing on my head.

THAT SOUNDS SO AWESOME *__*

No I am serious! What a chance to talk about engaging with entertaining-but-problematic media. :O Also, the opportunity for lulz is ENORMOUS.

And for that reason I might well choose to teach it in future, but here they've already read it and presumably love it, so it's not going to do well for my lesson if I come in from a position of not actually having read it and presume to tell them what to think, y'know?

Mostly it's a film review lesson, I can do that.

Oh, totally! (And I would never want to tell you how to format a lesson anyway - sorry! *sheepish* I got overexcited mostly because I really, really think that schools should expand out from teaching the stuff that's on the standard curriculum as "classic literature" to finding interesting things to talk about in all kinds of books, so I think it is super cool to teach stuff like Twilight and sff, and, I dunno, Animorphs and all the stuff that tends to get dismissed out of hand, along with the Shakespeare and the Dickens and so forth.)

I'm absolutely with you in that, and it would be awesome in terms of, like, comparing heroines and agency and all sorts of various themes, and if I were teaching them from the beginning of the unit it's something I'd really be interested in exploring. Teaching them how to think critically, and such. Just at this point I sadly only have 1 hour, and I just need to present an outstanding lesson, so there's not much scope. But yeah, totally, teaching stuff they're more likely to read and get on with is valuable, letting themselves seem a character like them in the literature and such like. I'm a linguist, so it's not about the plot so much for me anyway. Which is something I kinda hate a little, I admit. XD

Actually, I agree this could be really interesting and challenging. There are so many problems with the text that creating a lesson plan could be really fun and engaging.

Or something...?

ION, brother's new girlfriend is a twilight fan. So far her only strike but HOMG MAJOR ONE.

Yeah, like I said to Becca though, it's one hour long lesson from a person who hasn't read the book. It's something I'd definitely be interested in exploring in the future, when I have four to six weeks in which to subtly point out (and make them work out for themselves) the problems, but for now it'd do more harm to my potential lesson than good.

Yeah - you would need the time to get them familiar with the text, etc. Ugh. Sorry :(

*hugs*

Ahaha good luck.
The film is a lot better than the book in terms of style, if it's any consolation, though the content is still pretty problematic...

Sorry about your life!

You know what, though, whatever. Almost every fourteen year old girl I've encountered in the last few years loves the crap out of that thing. I figure every generation has something they love that older people are all disapproving about. Have fun with it, you'll be awesome! *cheers you on* (Trust me, I'm not saying it's not problematical because holy hell yes)

Best of luck and everything with the interview and the lesson - um - I don't know what to say really. I mean, Twilight ... I've read it you see and ... No, you stick to getting them to review the movie. What do yu plan to do with the ones who haven't seen it? There must be a few with some self respect.

I. Whut. I don't even.

I know that teaching popular media is a way of getting kids to actually engage with the material but. Twilight? I mean. Really?

Please tell me it's a one off lesson because you're being interviewed an they're not actively studying it.
