The podfic thing is interesting.

I record podfic without any pressure to perform, because I know that I can read with expression, because I studied speech and drama for years and got grade 6 in something, in there, but mostly because I don't get any feedback. I don't record podfic for the acclaim or for the feedback, I record podfic to make the writer happy and to make me happy, and in that sense it's kind of a purer artform, for me, than the writing thing is. (I'm working on writing when it isn't for an audience, I'm working on writing and being able to go to bed before I've got any feedback - it's a work in progress.) While I'm participating in a rec fest I'm not sure I'm keen on my podfics being more readily fed back on, because to be honest feedback makes me more nervous than it doesn't, and I'm not sure I want to have something to live up to. That said, I do think my podfic could improve drastically. One of my goals this year is to learn to work audacity better, because I'd like to record longer fic and I don't yet know how to do that without doing it in one session. (Yes, the 2-3 hour fics I've done so far have been done in one session; please remember those are the edited, cut down versions...) But as well as working audacity better, I also need to know how I'm doing, what I could do better on, and that's not going to happen without feedback... but it won't necessarily happen with feedback, either. The Cult of Nice is wonderful and affirming and unhelpful, and I'm grateful for it and rail against it in one motion. Mostly I want to deserve the praise I'm given.

Like I say, I'm not finished yet. I have progress to make, and expectations is a serious area that needs work.

See, I've got a degree in acting and spent years doing PR and PR videos and blah de blah blah. And I've got wicked stage fright when it comes to doing podfic - especially Checkmate - because I want the voices to be just right. And Carson's accent isn't quite right yet. And I don't have Rodney's bite down enough. I'm getting in my own way. And I'm worried it won't be up to people's expectations, because, well, particularly the Checkmate series has become some folks blankie. Which is awesome. But.

Yeah. Silly. I have microphone an everything. Well, also and a completely dead computer that has all my stuff on it. and I'm borrowing my husband's spare, but still.

I understand; your fic is really well loved, and there's definitely pressure there, plus you're closer to the fic than anyone else and therefore far more inclined to nitpick. Have you recorded any other podfic? Have you considered it? It might be easier to record something else - of your own, or other people's - as a way of getting into it, seeing how you do. Y'know?

If you have recorded and I've missed it, I apologise. I'm crap at keeping up with these things. XD

Oh, don't worry. No. I recorded "Checkmate" via phone post earlier this year. You know, the one that started it all. :) That eased some of the tension, then my compy died. Grr.

Interesting about the not wanting feedback...not demanding feedback! I've had this conversation with jinjurly before and it's interesting how pretty much any post I make will actually make me anxious if I don't hear back, yet podfic is totally fine just out there (and I don't have any degree in speech or drama or really anything supporting my belief that I can do it :).

And OMG, you record everything in one go? How do you DO that? Why don't you just copy and paste the pieces together? [I feel like there must be an obvious answer but that's like the only thing I actually did learn in audacity :)

Also, just in case you're wondering, I'm finally sitting down trying to write my feed back and was trolling every participants journal hoping *someone* had posted one i could use as a model...
