Jan. 7th, 2004 09:09 pmJust lost a huge entry. DAMMIT!
Okay- try again.
Basically, I was attempting to justify my complete failure at my New Years Resolution so far. =) I haven't written anything in a couple of days, but I have posted a drabble to
hpsquick100, a tiny ficlet to
12am_nosh, two fics to inkstained fingers, and plotted a SS/SB story I hope to write sometime in the near future.
It's very odd, because I've been turning this fic around in my head for a *long* time- 6 months at least, but no matter how I tried it it never seemed to work. Now I've changed the pairing from SS/RL to SS/SB and suddenly it makes sense. The story works so much better with that pairing, and I have no idea why it took me so long to see that!
I haven't actually started writing it yet, as I'm not entirely secure about my Sirius voice. I've only written Snape and Lupin in fics so far (unless you count a really lame-ass parody fic at the SSFQF ;)) and no one else. I've written pretty much everyone in drabbles, as I am a drabble-whore... feel free to check out my memories and if I haven't drabbled a favourite character of yours then request one. ;)
I guess I should work on my various character voices- I really need practice. Anyone have any suggestions on how I should do that?
On the home front, there is a fragile peace reigning, since I'm packed and leaving tomorrow morning. Neither of us wants to part on a row. I can deal with that. What she said still hurts, but there will be no apologies, so I'll take what I can.

Date: 2004-01-07 09:44 pm (UTC)First of all let me tell you that I absolutely love your icon! Théoden as well as Bernard Hill get far too little aknowledgement, IMO.
Second (but not of lesser 'value') something re: character's voices. During writing my long (okay, maybe a bit too long) HP story Sal Si Puedes I did some major PoV/character voice experiments - as a matter of fact it was one of the main reasons for starting to write that fic. I find first person narrative terribly hard to write (to make it convincing, IC and not too author-centric is a hell of a piece of work!) and now I find myself at making the choice of voice(s) for another piece of fanfic as well as for some original writing. It's difficult. I'd really like to write a third person narrative from nobody's point of view (at least of nobody's PoV who's 'involved') but that seems to be even more challenging.
Anyway... (I'm babbling, sorry) WhatI found helpful while writing a certain charater's voice I tried to imagine how she or he would 'talk' about (voice) irrelvant, minor things - maybe some remark about the weather or some food or about a passerby or something like that. I never used those 'études' as part of my stories, but they helped me to 'get the feeling' of XYZ's voice. And then I tried to work out how XYZ would talk about matter A to person B and if she or he would phrase things in a different way if she or he were talking to person C instead.
Ah, I guess I'm not being of much help here... sorry.
I wish you all the best with your story, thoug!
Good luck!
Becca
