Coolest reading group session ever today. We, after reading chapters and chapters of a book, discovered that the main character was black. It was AWESOME. We discussed race and gender and the assumptions that are made when reading, we discussed race-bending and the anger it prompts, as well as people's refusal (HUNGER GAMES) to accept that non-white characters are not in fact white, we discussed racial markers and whether they are fair, we discussed inadvertent racism and deliberate stupidity, and decided as a class that it would be great if we could find a non-white hero to read about next too. It was really interesting to discuss this in a really mixed group, to see the different perspectives that all the kids had, and to see them telling a boy that he didn't get to shout over them just because he was a White Male. XD

I Like.

That sounds like a great session! Out of interest, what book was it? I've seen people write similar about Neil Gaiman's Anansi Boys - that they didn't realise characters were black until partway through - but to me it was signalled from the beginning.
