The problem the problem the problem with fighting so hard to make changes is that sustained effort is awful and impossibly difficult, and every bad mood feels like a failure. And since you're feeling like a failure anyway you might as well, right? With the old patterns of thought and the mental soundtrack?

The swamp is always waiting, it's only the surface that the mental flamethrower has dried out. Working on climate change, obviously, but there's a lot of shit still to clear up.
