Mostly my feeling at the moment is just... how will I ever know enough about anything to make a difference? My brain is too small and the world is way too big. How is focus achieved?

I think this has always been the case - either you focus entirely on one area but everything else takes the back seat or you try to do everything and you barely skim the surface. It's just more visible now, with all that wealth of information at our fingertips, and yes, it is a bit daunting and discouraging.

On the other hand, it depends on what you mean by "making a difference". You make a difference in the lives you touch - you definitely made a difference in mine. My life is better for your presence, in many ways. That counts for something, too. :)

That's why Dumbledore had a Pensieve.

Seriously, though, you will know enough about the things you need to know enough about, and just by the process of learning and sharing, you'll make a difference. One step at a time.

You might be interested in the Four Stages of Competence learning model. In my experience, it holds true. YMMV, of course.
