Okay, a little backstory here. This drabble is indirectly due to <lj site="livejournal.com" user=" iibnf">, who had mentioned the ongoing saga of the coffee shop in which she is always given wildly bizarre names. <small>Ray, my friend, I am going to endanger your life... <end geek...></small> I looked up one of the random names in a baby names book, since I was paying my respects to a little munchkin recently brought into this world.
Sadly, the name given to Bernice, and the meaning of it, have both been lost in the mists of time. On the other hand, I looked up Blaise and found that "Blaise" means either "to mark a trail," or "to stammer."
"Ahaaa," says I, stroking my chin. "A bunny chews my foot..."
<b>Blaise took a deep breath and concentrated, raising his wand.</b>
Oh hush, you. His *wand*, as in his *wand*. So yeah- I think Blaise Zabini is a boy. Partly because the girls tend to have girly names in the HP-verse (yes that makes sense. Shut up.) And partly because most of the names are related to various myths, legends etc. and Blaise was Merlin's master. And *he* was a bloke. Feel free to argue with me, and I will taunt you a second time!
<b>"C-c-clarison-n..." He frowned at himself and tried desperately to gain control of his mouth, pressing a clenched fist hard against his forehead.</b>
Much thanks due to <lj site="livejournal.com" user=" wikdsushi"> and <lj site="livejournal.com" user=" aqua_alta"> who discussed this long and hard, long and hard enough to make me feel guilty that it was only a drabble, certainly. I wanted a spell for "clear speech" or "clear voice", and this one had the best ring to it.
Also, I'm quite pleased with the explanatory sentence- I have a terrible tendency to over use adjectives... "he said angrily, he said frustratedly, blah blah blah..." so I try to say things without *saying* 'em, if you see what I mean. I think that worked quite well.
<b>"C-clarison-n-n-no V-voc..." he could feel himself flushing red, though there was no one around to see; even Slytherins considered him conceited, thought he believed himself too good to talk to them. </b>
He never speaks in canon. I'm sure there are a billion characters that don't, (okay, not a billion, I lie) but none have caused quite the fascination of Blaise. Just thought I'd elaborate on that a little.
<b>"C-claris-s-sono... F-fuck!" His fist lashed out and the mirror shattered, smears of blood marring the crystalline web. Frustrated tears leaked from the corners of a hundred reflected eyes.
The spell remained unsaid.
He stayed silent in class.</b>
I was so tempted to write a Snape/Blaise fic based on this. Snape's his head of house, and might have something to say to him about his dandyfine scores in Potions, Arithmancy, whatever, but his abysmal marks in Charms and Transfiguration.
This has actually interested me in *wordless* magic, rather than wandless. There have been a couple of times in canon where adult wizards have cast spells without speaking, which seems to me a particularly useful skill, especially if you're spying or whatever. Apparating without a loud *CRACK* would probably come in useful, and all.
Anyway. There're some of my thoughts. :)</lj-cut>
