Aug. 21st, 2015 10:22 amI steal from Res because I haven't been around in possibly a million years? Yeah. Sounds right. A million. :D
So what have you been up to?
Well it has been my summer holiday! I've been writing with Tacit practically every day, as she does her dissertation and I flail pathetically in the direction of the Artist's Way. I went to Nine Worlds and saw old friends and new friends (plus FRANCES HARDINGE OH MY HEART OH MY STARS) and got thoroughly overwhelmed by people in mostly fun ways. I have spent way too much money on furniture and flights, because I am nesting hard but also very lonely and without (many) local friends - although I am seriously working on this. I've been going through a hardcore depressive phase (more in a mo) but I am - when chemically able - very very happy here. I want to stay.
Major life changes? Same old same old?
I have been taken on at my school for another year at least, although they haven't entirely filled my timetable or told me how much they'll be paying me yet. They have told me about the Interesting kids in my tutor, though, and I'm seriously looking forward to the challenge.
At the moment I'm living in Nottingham, which I adore; it's cute and interesting and has great shopping. It's an endearingly earnest Northern hipster, where everything is quirky and handmade and you can go classes on making bunting and tiaras, and people try so very hard to be cool but still can't help but call you duck. I deeply love it here, and I deeply love my flat - it's in an old cotton mill so the windows are enormous and the ceilings are high, and I'm finally learning to sleep here even with the student residence across the courtyard. I have a very comfortable sofa and anyone is, at any time, welcome to stay. LET ME SHOW YOU MY FAVOURITE SHOPS.
I have been up and down, mentally. I've found medication that works for me but we've been futzing with the dosage some; I'm on the lower dosage again now (since yesterday so ahahahaha dizzy) and applying for therapy because underlying issues that need sorting if I'm ever to attain goals that I want. (I HAVE GOALS NOW, OKAY, THIS IS RATHER LOVELY).
Like I say, I'm kinda lonely, but I'm dealing with it; I'm joining a choir that starts up the week after next, I'm joining (and possibly helping to run) a book club that's starting with Uprooted so that's a good sign, and I'm going to be volunteering (possibly running a writing group) at an old Victorian Music Hall/Christian charity/cafe bar/superhero lair (there is a cave in the basement).
What fandom are you in/do you spend most of your time in?
I've been reading Hawaii 5-0, Hockey RPF, Stargate:Atlantis (OH MAN NOSTALGIA) and Teen Wolf mostly; I've become an admin on a Sterek recs tumblr; I'm writing SGA and Hawaii 5-0 and have ridiculous ideas for Good Omens fic (NEVER LEAVE ME, GAVIN).
I'm still trying to work out a fandom experience that works for me and involves Actual Conversations, especially since the mass migration to tumblr, but even after 20 years (TWENTY YEARS) I still haven't worked it out. (typo: pout. Accurate).
Where do you hang out online?
Mostly on my tumblr. I occasionally remember to tweet but not terribly often. It's a weird and very different fannish experience there, but I'm getting much better at not over-investing and upsetting myself? Er, that sounds bad. I dunno, it's weird, I like it, there are SO MANY THINGS I wish it did better, most especially supporting conversations. So I should basically hang out here more is what I'm saying. ¬_¬
What are you reading?
Fanfic. Stupid, ridiculous, unhealthy amounts of fanfic. I spent literally all day yesterday reading 120,000 words of Sterek. I recognise that this is not good for me. XD I am also re-reading everything by Tamora Pierce because nostalgia, considering reading Uprooted again, need to read all the comics I've bought but haven't got around to, and also need to read the book I'll be teaching from in September.
What are you watching?
Hawaii 5-0, SGA, a little Sports Night. Re: H50, it's frankly amazing how spectacular it looks now I've experienced Teen Wolf and the truly low standards of storytelling/continuity there. I adore the Teen Wolf characters but I am seriously never going to get further than 3a without someone to hold my hand, even with my love of Dylan O'Brien and his acting.
What are you making?
I am struggling. I'm trying. I am finding it difficult to keep pushing at the moment, and I know that's going to get even more difficult when I get back to work. However, I am making notes for an original short story I want to write, and I'm slowly scraping away at a self-indulgent McShep fic.
What are you squeeing about today?
On tumblr it has been designated Fanfic Writers Appreciation Day, so I'm squeeing about a lot, frankly. I'm reblogging a lot of tumblr ficlets, and I'm attempting to leave comments on AO3 fics, which I've been bad at lately - too used to the kudos button. I'm also going to have a crack at responding to old comments because I am the literal worst at that, ugh.
If you could rope old fandom friends into a new fandom, it would be.....
I don't know! What are you into? Maybe Rivers of London?
I should really watch/read/dive into _______ and then come talk to you about it!
I realised this was what I should be doing. I have no idea! Tell me!
What else is on your mind?
Holidaaaaaaaaaaaaaay \o/
