Gah. I'll have to look to get numbers and dates and such, but there was an article on them in Ancient History a few years ago. Hell, I used to have copies of all this stuff. I'll see what I can find again. If I can dig it up, I'll try to photocopy an article I had to get out of a university library. There's some really spectacular stuff, if you can find it.
If you want to learn more about Thebes itself, there's a wonderful book called The Topology of Thebes that covers nothing but its physical layout over several periods. It's extremely academic, but I enjoyed it. Then, I'm a dork.
Any biography on Philip of Macedon ought to have some good starting points and references... let me see what I can dig up. I also have a contemporary sourcebook about Alexander's life, but that might be too late...
