Mar. 27th, 2005 02:02 pmI don't believe Jesus was the son of God. I don't believe he rose from the dead. I think too much focus is placed on the miracles, and I think that's a bad thing. Because sooner or later, in all likelihood, someone will find Jesus' grave, and there will be a war. And the people in charge, the Christians in charge, have nookelar weapons.
I do believe Jesus existed, and I believe he had a lot of interesting and sensible things to say. I think a lot of what he said, and a lot of how Paul interpreted it is completely outdated- it's two thousand years old. Jesus updated what Moses had said, because it was outdated, because the people hadn't been ready to hear what he had to say; maybe it's time for another update, only no one would believe a 'messiah' today. Because they think a book is more important than an ideal.
So I'm not going to say "Christ is risen." I'm not going to say "he is risen indeed! Hallelujah!" You have never heard a less enthusiastic 'hallelujah' than British Christians, I'm telling you that now. What I will say is this- under all the religion, under all the pomp and circumstance and draped altars and robes and sceptres and stained glass windows and collection plates and sunday schools and mini tombs, there's a simple message. And that's what I'm going to be thinking about, today. The bits of it I'm not asleep, anyway.
In essence Jesus said, like Bill and Ted, "be excellent to each other." It's as simple as that.
Although Jesus didn't play air guitar.
