Bird and Snake. Part IV.

(Does anyone else remember this? For reference: I, II, and III)

"I don't think you're supposed to use words like that, Bird."

Snake's voice was rather grumpy, although he pretended it wasn't, because in his opinion Bird had been spending far too much time with his experiments lately. It wasn't that he missed Bird, or anything soppy like that, of course. It was just that when you were used to talking to someone, you noticed when they weren't there any more. Bird turned to face him, and looked rather embarrassed.

"I'm sorry, Snake. I didn't think you'd hear."

"Well I did," said Snake, matter-of-factly, and slithered a little closer. The ground in front of Bird was darker, but Snake didn't notice until his scales were all covered with mud. "Bird, this is disgusting. What are you doing?"

"Getting it wrong," said Bird, miserably, and gazed down at the puddle of mud.

"Very well," said Snake. "I asked the wrong question. What are you trying to do?" He slithered towards the water, meaning to wash himself off, because he didn't have the patience to wait until the mud dried before he got clean.

"I'm trying," said Bird, patting forlornly at a small pile of slightly drier mud with the tip of his wing, "to make something. But it dries out too fast. And when I try to put water on, it all leaks out of the bottom." Bird sighed, and Snake stopped his happy wriggling in the water. It wasn't quite as happy, when Bird was so sad.

"What you need is a proper base for it," said Snake, only he chose not to nod wisely this time. He really hated getting water in his mouth.

"What do you mean?"

"Well," said Snake, thoughtfully, "why do you suppose the big water doesn't sink into the ground?"

"I don't know." Bird wandered a little closer, taking his attention away from his experiment for a second, and Snake was rather pleased. "I never really thought about it before."

"That's your trouble, Bird." He slithered out of the water, scales glistening, and settled himself comfortably on a firm patch of sand. "You don't think about things until they go wrong. Put your wing in the water."

Bird did as he was asked, and then his face got a look of surprise. He pushed his feathers into the ground under the water, and pulled out a stone.

"Well I'll be blowed," said Bird. "You are clever, Snake."

"I always thought so," said Snake, and hissed happily to himself, watching as Bird collected stones.
