Hi, I'm a Random Internet Lurker, but I thought I might be able to help. :3

By Paintshop you mean Paintshop Pro, yes? I suggest making another layer on top, and either (a) painting flamey-looking colors over just the sword and setting it on low opacity or (b) selecting the area to be enflamed, filling it with a gradient of some kind, playing around with layer options like Hard Light/Soft Light/Overlay, then blurring the edges a bit with the Smudge tool.

If that makes no sense, or if I'm drastically misinterpreting your intentions for the icon, I'm sorry. :3
