I beg you to turn your face from the room at large; or, if the day is fine, to ensure that no passers by might see your countenance. I fear that my next comment might turn you a quite remarkable shade of puce, and I'd rather not have widespread shock and disruption on my conscience - that's rather more your area of expertise. You are braced, I hope? Then I shall continue.

I must offer you an apology.

They have to keep peace or Adam'll get naked narked and destroy 'em all.

SIRIUS/GREEBO!

Of men and gods such tales are told
and such a tale is this
of Slytherin sly, and Gryffindor bold,
and, indirectly, fish

Such lovers these two should have been
but fate was out of luck
for the two were always seen
to argue, not to fuck.

"I have a plan," the cunning Fate
gathered gods and said
"All we must do, you see, is wait
'til both of them are dead."

To force together lion and snake
this is what they did;
Of Gryffindor, they made a lake,
Slytherin, a giant squid.

Richard gaped, not used to being ... well, seen.

"You're from Below?"

The young man's demeanour suddenly changed and he smirked, leaving go of Richard's arm; even though his eyes couldn't be seen, Richard was aware that he was being examined and shifted uncomfortably.

"In a manner of speaking," he eventually answered, his smile twisted a little.

Old Bailey had asked his older brother, but Bow was, as ever, non-commital.

...see the importance of deification, the importance that great thinkers are somehow different from the rest of us, somehow more than human. Is this, perhaps, to avoid making an effort? Is it to make ourselves feel better about our failings and inadequacies? Are we trying to excuse ourselves from achievement?

Angels clothéd all in white,
the sanctimonious buggers.
With their wing-spans, and their bloody
'Holier than thou'
(and they are, and they know it, and that's the worst)
And their bloody ineffable bloody smiles -
You can trust 'em, though.
Don't have to like 'em, but you can trust 'em.

Demons?
Bastards.

"What about you, Charlie," asked Molly, ladelling peas onto her plate. "Are you going out tonight?"

"Nah," said Charlie, after a moment's consideration. "I thought I might stay in and shag Remus, tonight."

In the sudden silence Remus choked on his potatoes and flushed bright red.

"CHARLIE WEASLEY!" shrieked Molly. "WHAT have I told you about talking with your mouth full?"

But the melancholy that had made him seem mature as a child now just made him old, and tired, and alone. When he did smile - at Black, or Harry, or Dumbledore - it was always a shock to see that familiar grin on an adult's face; like the mask of adulthood slipped, for a moment, and the seventeen year old Remus laughed at the world.

"His parents died."

"People do."

"How can you look at it like that?"

"For Merlin's sake it's the only way to look at it! People live, and people die, and beneath all the sentimentality and futile tears the only thing, the only thing that anyone is thinking is that they're bloody glad it wasn't them."

I really do think you're wonderful.

and, indirectly, fish - that is one of the best lines I've ever read. No, seriously. it's got the kind of effortless perfection that PG Wodehouse manages. eeeeeeeeeeee!

"In a manner of speaking" - did you just cross Neverwhere with GO? OH. MY. GOD. THE LOVE.

And, um, I am lacking intelligent comment other than "brilliant" on the rest. But I do think that, and I suspect I shall be slinging them around in my head for quite a while.
