How on earth does one go about getting references?

See, I got fired from my last job due to ill health. Which is not going to look good. And at Uni I was a completely invisible student; I didn't distinguish myself in any way. I have no idea who I could possibly ask to stand up for me and say, hey, she'll do okay.

*puzzled*

The people who fired you should still give you a reference.

Also, talk to friends for character references, or professors/teachers at Uni for academic references.

I got my last two jobs with no references, though.

Generally one asks the professors most likely to remember one. Or fakes it. Invent a professor and a phone number, write a fake letter, and sign. :D

What about your supervisor who was pissed you were fired? Phone him and ask him if he'd give you a reference without mentioning the ill health. He'll probably be agreeable. Everyone screws the system together.

Which does make one wonder why anyone uses the system, actually...

Anyway, I'll give you a reference. I'll say you were a creative consultant and copyeditor. :D

What about the person at your job who was so furious that you'd been fired? It sounds like they, at least, were very happy with what you'd been doing there and recognized the value of it. And your health problems were short-term issues - it wasn't like you had the plague. :]
