Every fic that I write, no matter who the characters, is about me. Me and my characters.

I don't know if admitting that proves I'm enormously shallow, or whether that's just the way things are.

*shrugs*

Every story everybody writes is about them in some way; otherwise they couldn't have written it. Not that every story is directly and specifically about some real incident, it's not as easy a link as that, but a story you have no emotional resonance with, a story you don't get on a viceral level because you've been there, is a story that I strongly suspect would suck.

And you, darling? Do not suck.

*delurks just to say* That explains why you are able to create such emotion in your characters (and elicit it in your readers). It's a gift, I think, to be able to take a piece of yourself and set it to paper (or computer screen, as the case may be) in such a way that other people feel by reading it. You aren't shallow. You're brilliant.

Nothing about anything, but...

have you seen this interview with Paul Bettany in the Guardian Unlimited?

It made me chuckle loudly.

Eeeehehehehe, an angel, eh?

He's so worth the fannish admiration. I don't get ridiculously girly over just anyone, you know.

Thanks for the link, lovely.

Everything any decent writer writes is about themselves in one way or another. What else do they have? It's all mary-sue-age, to a greater or lesser extent.

It only makes you shallow if you can't turn that self-experience outwards and use it as a filter through which to present the world -- if your fiction is shallow and masturbatory, if your mary sue is obvious and boring.

And yours in't. :)

If you find yourself in a fairytale, and you're asked a riddle by the guardian of the threshold, the answer is always some variant on "Myself."

Just sayin'.
