So... I saw the new Pirates.

Um... yeah. I think I need to see it again but man was that a disappointment. Seriously. It was nowhere near as good as the first, of course, but it never could have been. It takes the theory that sequels should have the same stuff as the first but BIGGER and LOUDER to extremes. I doubt there has been a film before, or at least so popular a one, that was so obviously based on popularity polls. I mean... all the characters were there. ALL OF THEM. And... okay, that last one? At the end? YES! YES YES YES! Possibly favourite moment. But I don't think we needed such an obvious OH! The public reacted well to this character and therefore we will have them again only MORE!

Bad things: There were too many ridiculous accents. I spent so long figuring out what people were saying that I was even more confused than I suspect I was supposed to be. Too much stuff was packed in, absolutely, and there was too much CG, and the music was much much worse than the first film. There was, basically, too much self conscious effort to better the first film.

Jack - the slow motion hero pose at the end? WHAT THE FUCK. No. No no, I didn't... I can take him facing his death matter-of-factly if there's no other option, but SLOW MOTION IS WRONG. There was also too much of him really, since the joy of the first, part of the joy of the first was waiting happily for Jack to reappear. Also? I was really pissed off that they explained the 'and then they made me their chief' comment. Speculation about that was completely one of my favourite passtimes since watching the film. I was annoyed, too, that Jack's best line was stolen from Douglas Adams.

Okay, there was also a bit of private GRR because there was this long-ass crossover fic I have been vaguely planning for Quite Some Time and the souls thing? The souls thing I was going to use, and then they used it, so now it wouldn't be new or different. I sulk.

You want to know what the best bit was? There's this bit in the first film where they're sailing through a storm and Orlando Bloom has clearly been told to look like he's pulling on ropes, but he can't actually pull it anywhere, so he just keeps moving it in triangles. This film? He pulled on a rope and like, tied it off or whatever, and wandered off. YAY VAGUE REALISM!

It was kinda funny, and it was spectacular, sure, but I just... spent so much of it sighing in an annoyed (and no doubt annoying) fashion. I'll go see it again, sure, and maybe it'll be better this time now my expectations are lower. Just.

It so could have been better.

In other news, I went up the CN tower and wandered around on the highest observation platform in the world, I went to Niagara Falls, I paddled in Lake Ontario, and now I'm stupidly tired.

And Toronto movie theater? SCARY big.

I go be incoherent elsewhere now.

Add my post on PotC to [livejournal.com profile] phoenixchilde's and you have more of an accurate representation of the whole film. It had good bits. I'll admit.

I blame DT. As I usually do. But in this case it's legitimate. *eyes the Dixie Pig*
