Aug. 3rd, 2006 02:58 pmWoooooow. Seriously, wow. Romsey Abbey yesterday, with a piece of stained glass featuring a gorgeous angel that I fell in love with which may (or may not) have been designed by Henry Holiday. And then, today, Winchester Cathedral. The thing about Winchester Cathedral is that I could quite possibly spend a week in there and still not be done. I saw 13th century wall paintings, and a beautiful sculpture by Anthony Gormley, and Edward Burne-Jones stained glass. Seriously, it deserves the italics. There are four pieces in the Epiphany Chapel and I just... the colours are so stunning and I stood and gaped. There was also a lovely piece with four archangels, and one with a guy in a safari hat and one of those ridiculously large moustaches, which the angel in my head was chortling happily over. I think I need to get a decent camera purely for the stained glass, because the online resources are... decent in places, but not particularly thorough.
The library with the 12th century Bible was, unfortunately, closed. Will have to pootle back up there soon and take a look and attempt not to spasm at the cathedral library. It has big globes.
...no Freud, please. We're British.
