2) "That's my girl," said Kaylee, barely above a whisper. The hand she laid on the wall was still shaking, a little. "That's my good girl."
3) The Atlantean appeared without his even having to ask. Lucifer's mouth curled into something resembling a smile and he ran his hand lightly over the Bar, which shifted colour a couple of shades closer to rosewood.
4) The sun made an effort for him, but Adam shook his head fiercely, his eyes stinging a very little.
"You stop that," he told the sky. "You stop that and start behaving yourself. I've got to be grown up, now."
There was silence for a moment in Tadfield. A moment tense and stretched and so full of unspoken feeling your ears could pop with it.
"Me too," said Adam roughly, and wiped his arm across his eyes.
And it started to rain.
As though it was just like anywhere else.
5) Jack listened to the water lapping gently in the lake, stroking his hand back and forth along the taffrail. It was one of the only undamaged sections left, should have been smooth as silk, but a splinter dug itself into the tip of his finger nonetheless. His hand stilled on the rail, a quick breath hissing between his teeth, but his thumb never stopped moving, gently running across the wood.
"I know, love," he whispered, to the night and to no one. "I'm sorry."
