Disorganised Rec Post!
Oct. 6th, 2006 03:58 pmStargate: Atlantis fandom is enormously prolific, enormously well populated, and enormously enormously talented. As a result of this I've been reading the fic pretty much constantly for a month or so, which in turn means I have a vastly overpopulated memories section. Wouldn't it be easier if I had all the information in one post? Why yes, yes it would. The 'one post' thing is perhaps a little ambitious, considering the size of the memories and bookmarks folder, but there will be a couple of rec posts coming from over here.
Do not be put off if you've never seen any of the show.
I will be giving a brief summary of each fic, probably mention the significant or particularly well-written characters, and will mention a) spoilers and b) amount of required knowledge. Some of the AUs and pre-canon fics can be read just as well with no prior knowledge whatsoever.
So yeah.
Transcendental by
astolat is the first that comes to mind, considering that I've been reading it for quite a while, now. In which Rodney takes over, essentially; It's very long, which is definitely something to recommend it, the plot is excellent and well thought out, the characters are all excellently written, the slash is hot and believable.
NC-17, John Sheppard/Rodney McKay spoilers at least until 1x15, Before I Sleep, and it's definitely one that you're going to need knowledge of the canon for.
Once you're done with that story, check out the rest of her fic, since she's covered a hell of a lot of fandoms (I particularly recommend the House fic Maryland) and has a lot more SG:A fic. Of those I'd point you most enthusiastically towards 'Touch', I believe, as well as 'If There Be Thorns' which I'll go into in more detail later. But I've genuinely never read anything that hasn't delighted me, amongst her fiction.
Next, the fic that actually got me into the fandom in the first place:
String Theory by
toft_froggy. This fic is genuinely astounding. It's an AU in which Rodney McKay is a conductor who discovers John Sheppard, something of a prodigy on the violin. And it sounds so completely strange as a premise but it works, completely and utterly, and the evolution of the relationship is stunning to watch. (Not to mention the fact that it's reallyquitehot). The first time I read this fic I hadn't the faintest idea who any of the characters were, and I loved it so much that I started downloading the show. The second time I read it I was able to judge how well-written the characters were (and well-written they were indeed) and was amazed again at how carefully the show had been woven into the edges of the story. Again, really satisfyingly long, which I love in a story. Please read this. Seriously.
NC-17, John/Rodney a couple of echoes of the show but no real spoilers, and no knowledge of the show is necessary to enjoy the story. READ IT.
Another thing that got me into fandom, of course (it's always nice to have someone to blame) was
foreverdirt's rec post which is excellent and very well organised and if I repeat anything she's said it's only because she has mahvellous taste and I'm a dreadful plagiarist. Particular squees in the direction of 'Freedom's Just Another Word For Nothing Left to Lose' and the AU 'Small Primes and Square Roots' but to be honest every single fic on there is superlative. :D
Speaking of
foreverdirt, also, her An Introduction to the Characters of Finite Groups is possibly my favourite Zelenka characterisation in any story I've read, and I absolutely adore Zelenka. The plot is light and funny and very much something that would happen on the show, and the outsider's perspective on the pairing is fantastic. I do so love this fic.
G, Rodney/John, Zelenka POV set early season 1, spoilers for 1x03 Hide and Seek, it'd be useful to know who the fic is talking about.

mercuriosity In which Rodney makes a list. Funny.
Predictably, Rodney didn't let up once they were outside. "I'm thinking you need some kind of list, Colonel," he said, his hands framing an imaginary document in the air. "If you really are that clueless, I mean."
"Give it a rest, Rodney," John said, without much hope--his best bet was just to walk as fast as he could back to his quarters, and hope Rodney would get tired of his little joke sooner rather than later.
"101 Ways to Tell if This Week's Alien Hottie is Making Eyes at You," Rodney shouted after him. "Number one: Does she have eyes?"
NC-17, John/Rodney no real spoilers, and although you'll enjoy it more if you know who they're talking about, you'll be okay without. Really good story.
Okay, this is taking longer than I'd thought; I'll probably edit this post later instead of spamming your f-list with numerous rec posts. I'll let you know when it's done, but for now I'm tired and I want to go finish reading Transcendental.
It's been a busy and weird day. XD
