Okay, I don't get the whole iPod thing. Can I download what I have on my iPod onto my computer? This is probably the most ridiculous question, but I have iTunes but only seem to be able to play the tracks, not save them. And I want to do that before I try putting other music on there.

So confuuuuuused.

Unfortunately, you need another program to back the music up (PodRescue's good, but I'm not sure if it's Apple-specific). Your best bet, if you can't get something like that, is to just burn off CDs of the music. iTunes will let you burn MP3-format CDs, but you have to tell it that's what you want (I believe that under Preferences, and then the Burning tab). And if you have anything from the music store, that'll have to be burned off as a music CD.
...If your files aren't in MP3 format to begin with, the only way I know to fix that is change iTunes' settings so they'll import as MP3s (again, I think that's under Preferences), and re-import everything.

It's a hassle, I know, but to the best of my knowledge that's the only way around it. Unless they've done something to iPods since winter 2005 that lets you save the files, but from what you've said, they haven't.

I recommend YamiPod (www.yamipod.com) as far as a backup music program goes. But yeah, what minkhollow said. YamiPod's really easy to figure out though.

Actually, it's easier than these punks'll have you believe.

Go to My Computer and open the iPod up in that, then go to Tools --> Folder Options and hit the View tab. On the list of options, find "Hidden files and folders" and select "Show hidden files and folders", then hit OK. Now you'll be able to see THE SEKRIT FOLDERS.

Your music is stored in iPod_Control/Music in a bunch of Fxx folders. The files inside them will probably have stupid random names so you don't know what they are -- but if you drag the folders over to a new folder in your iTunes library folder, go to your iTunes preferences --> Advanced and make sure "Keep iTunes Music Folder Organised" is checked, then File --> Add folder to library, you'll be all set.

This ... probably sounds more complicated than it actually is, and looks like a long thing, but trust me, it's much better than finding a program to fiddle around with if you want to back up your whole library.
