Feb. 6th, 2007 08:05 pmSpoilers behind the cut, obviously.
Hunh. That was kinda... no, I approve. I was expecting more of a fanfare with the arrival of a new main character - big arrival on the Daedalus, or what have you, but no, this works. One of the anonymous characters stepping up; okay, yes, we haven't seen her before, but if it was anyone other than Jewel Staite we could have. Does that make sense? It's interesting in a kind of fanfic way - the idea that all the anonymous faces on Atlantis have stories behind them and are a main character of their own stories. Like The Secret Lives of Scientists by
julad.
Oh man, Rodney on performance evaluations... that is so perfect. Seriously. I just love how he is completely honest about how crap he is at people. Rodney is drawn with such broad strokes that he is almost consistently well characterised in fanfic, to the casual observer. And then you watch a bit longer, and get to know him a bit better, and you realise that he is like an onion, he has layers, and you love the fanfic writers who get that right to a degree that is quite unseemly and you remember why you're terrified of writing in this fandom and I'll stop talking now.
*SQUEES STUPIDLY* OMG HE IS CHUCK, HE IS! God, that's made my life. I swear that character was named by fandom, and that is such a wonderful thing. Yes, I know the actor is named Chuck, but that doesn't mean the show would name him that. It was just how fandom referred to him. And if he's been called that before please don't laugh too hard at me. You'll ruin my yay. Also? He's totally becoming a mainer character of late. This? Makes me laughably happy.
Ship arrived ahead of schedule. Hmm. Are they replicators/cants/whateverthesuffixis? Okay. Apparently not. I'm just paranoid/suspicious/cynical.
- sad off topic note: I want Rodney to roll his sleeves up. His grey shirt is not as sexy as John's black shirt, but I suspect that's down to the lack of forearms -
HAHAHAHA They beamed Rodney in his chair. I am so a fan of that mode of transportation. And... Rodney and Radek being on exactly the same wavelength and plotting evil together and Rodney being the voice of reason... I just adore these two. Their relationship has evolved over time and it's seriously a thing of beauty. I suspect I will forever be first and foremost a McShep shipper, but I would happily spend days reading about R&R friendship.
Okay, so the laserbeam did make me exclaim in dismay, yes, but now I just... is Dr Evil in anyone else's head? "And then we hit them with our giant 'laser'. Mwaha. Mwahahahaha. MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!"
Um. Elizabeth kind of kicked considerable ass in that comm conversation, but I don't like the message that was behind it. I don't like that she was saying it. It's more of a Caldwell point of view, and possibly she felt it was her only choice considering that this was an action/plan that she was forced into, and possibly this was the only way to defend it, but... No. I don't like it. It's ever so current, isn't it? :/
*cracks the hell up at John* So true, so true. There's really no use stroking his ego and telling him he should be in charge, because John only wants to be in charge every now and again, when there's asskickin' to be done. Can you see him doing Weir's job all the time? Actually reading through the performance reviews, for instance? No. Not gonna happen.
The power struggles in this are actually really interesting to watch - seeing where loyalties lie and so forth. It's too rushed, as things in SG:A really do tend to be (Sunday, anyone?) They seem to get into their heads an idea that something has been building or they haven't finished dealing with something, and they decide to deal with it all in one episode rather than planning an arc around it. I realise that there's a possibility that casting issues are at the heart of these hasty storylines, but I'm hoping that they start thinking about things a little more in advance from now on. And keep up what they've started; more team bonding time on Atlantis just as a part of everyday episodes, for instance.
*cracks up again* "As much as I hate to say it, Zelenka is not infallible." There was almost a backhanded compliment in there, Rodney. You're slipping. XD
Okay, the nuke falling scene and the city sinking scene were both very aesthetically pleasing. Also, yes, my two biggest fears thank you, Stargate, but still. Purdy.
"Well how come you get to be Mr Fantastic?" *CRACKS THE FUCK UP* I just. I love this show so hard. And Ronon's smile is making me think that his train of thought is "The Thing, eh? What thing in particular? Heh." (Oh, wait. Was that just me?)
OH MY FUCKING GOD! OH MY GOD SG:A WRITERS YOU MAY HAVE MY FIRST BORN CHILD! NO, SERIOUSLY! I AM DEAD OF GLEE! Eeeeeeeeeeeeee I know what I said about McShep earlier. SCREW IT. WRITE MORE MCKAY/ZELENKA! IT IS CANON! *flails and dies some more OMG* The best part? THERE IS NO OUTRAGE. It is accepted. Like... like it's actually true. I mean, like John's just saying it as a kind of - look, you guys know you work better after sex, get it done and let's get on with it!
I am so happy, right now. XD
Heeeeeee threesome. Total threesome. SO MUCH threesome. I'm going to be happy over this for weeks, I'm telling you. (It's actually really easy to read it as John/Rodney being an intense yet forbidden love, and McKay's pragmatic enough to have found someone else that he's very fond of, isn't it?)
David Hewlett sells the chair thing better than Joe. It looks like John's taking a nap, right now. Aaaand nothing makes me happier than Rodney's 'holy crap I actually did it' face. Except, possibly, his 'holy crap, I can't do this' face, although that's an entirely different type of pleasure and probably illegal in three or four states, over there. XD
OH MY GOD WHAT THE HELL! Oh oh oh oh oh no I hate cliffhangers!
Well that was impressive. Way too much was crammed into the first half, leaving things feeling unfinished and unresolved and hectic, but the second half had some pretty solid action and kept making me jump and flail and squeal. And I cannot wait for more, seriously. Blimey.

Yeah I guess once it was a done thing it's more strategic to show solidarity with one's own. As a diplomat she would do that even if hating that she's been forced into it. And yes, there are definitely parallels in current politics :/

Date: 2007-02-08 09:24 am (UTC)Re: Elizabeth... it was nice to see her doing her job, anyway. She was forced into that situation but she carried it off well, and of course Rodney automatically turning to her made me hugely happy. He's not a military man, and he doesn't have to bow to them the same way John does... which is obviously happymaking to an unrepentant slasher as well. XD
