I know I have writing memes to finish, but I also have to tidy my room so this is a slightly less time-consuming tidy-break diversion.

I MAKE SENSE!

1. Comment to this post with the name of a character that I have written in fic. Or geeked out about.
2. I will comment telling you the following:
a. What initially prompted me to like the character enough to write about him/her.
b. One of his/her best traits.
c. One of his/her worst traits.
d. How easy/difficult I find it to write the character.
e. The story/chapter/paragraph/phrase where I feel that I truly captured the character.
f. My plans (if any) to write the character in the near future.

Also? I LOVE THIS ICON. *smooches [livejournal.com profile] lucythedragon*

VENGEANCE:

Joe Dick. :P

a. HAR. Um... I over identify with Billy, and I started writing Joe as an extension of Billy. I do like the character, very much, but I think I'm gonna have to think about him a hell of a lot more before I consider writing him, really. I don't so much get him.
b. Best trait... anger. He cares enough about stuff to get angry about it, and he's completely unapologetic about that. It's easy to see where people stand with him, I think, although possibly only from the outside of the relationships.
c. I reckon his worst trait is insecurity/lack of trust => control issues. And for the record I am so wary of this comment because I don't know him so good and mbleh.
d. HARD. HARD, HARD, HARD. I don't tend to.
e. BWAHA NO.
f. Possibly. I may try. If you and [livejournal.com profile] fahye pretend you're not looking.

c. Oh tsh, it's your interpretation of him. Stand by your instincts!

a. I liked the possibilities in the character - he's not fleshed out much in canon, which left plenty of wiggle room, but the bits there are are intriguing. He's obviously competent, he's good at undercover, he's intelligent, he's got an edge of darkness to him... what's not to like?
b. He's a damned fine police officer. He kinda defines himself by his job, frequently, so that's a good thing. He's still kinda learning who he is outside of that; he has a tendency to define himself around things outside of himself, so when he's not being a police officer he shapes himself around music and Skazz.
c. Insecurity leading to sliiiiight possessiveness. Which is ironic considering he stole someone's boyfriend.
d. Kinda easy. I'm not always sure if I'm doing it well, and he's completely OOC from the Pterry one, but I like his mental voice. Kinda dry and cynical with a ridiculously soft centre that he buries deep.
e. Couldn't tell you. The writing I've done about him is kinda scattered to the four winds, so I dunno.
f. I would definitely, definitely like to. I'm gonna have to find some sort of excuse.

I want to see your answers to this for Skazz, now. Please?

a. John is totally fascinating. Joe plays him in a really interesting way, and it's tough to tell whether it's actual acting decisions or whether Joe's just kind of odd. :D His character fluctuates a lot, changes mood in the blink of an eye, and I relate to that a lot. I think there's a lot we don't know about John, and until we do it's really fun speculating. My paranoia about getting his characterisation right is out of this world, though.
b. His hair? :D Nah, I think it's his kinda... chameleon tendencies. He doesn't necessary fit in everywhere, but he's capable of making himself appear endearing and/or completely harmless until he goes psycho and KILLS EVERYONE. It's fun.
c. The times he makes Rodney feel like shit. I'm not just talking Trinity here, I'm also talking the eye-rolling and the small things that indicate that John gets to define who is and is not 'team' at any given moment. I'm fine with him yelling at Rodney to motivate him and so on, but putting him down in front of others? Not cool, writers John.
d. Fairly easy, but I really couldn't tell you whether my characterisation is any good or not. I write mostly by instinct, without thinking deeply about the characters, and maintaining that over 18,000 words is kinda tough. I'm not sure how consistent I'm being. Screw it, I'm having fun. :D
e. Huh. That's... not great. I don't think I really have yet. The fic is equal parts from John's and Rodney's perspectives but I'm way more familiar with Rodney - I identify more with him. It's kind of made the John parts almost... viewed through Rodney's eyes. That's something I'll have to consider while editing. I guess this is the closest I've got so far:

"We're not friends, Sheppard." The slight uncertainty that had been flirting with the edges of McKay's voice was abruptly gone, leaving him sounding arrogant and faintly amused. "We don't share."

Right. He‘d kinda got carried away for a second. When he spoke again his voice was as relaxed and opaque as it ever was.

“Well you just let me know how you’re going to take your revenge, Rodney, okay? I’ve got to get back to my film. The Delorean waits for no man.”

The quick assuming of a mask is pretty much how I see John; adopting humour as a defense mechanism, trying not to let people close.

f. HAHAHA oh hell. I have a folder full of AU ideas - at least ten. I think I'm gonna be writing them for a while. XD

Oooh.... DANNY. MWAHAHAHA.

(or Rodney, if you'd rather.)

Date: 2007-06-15 11:37 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] villainny.livejournal.com
a.Oh god, he's Danny! He's funny and sweet and an awesome friend and so very damaged. Plus Sorkinese is one of those really distinct mental voices which, okay, hard to get right, but once you have people will totally forgive you for not having any sort of plot.

I mean. Um. YAY DANNY!
b. He cares deeply about people and he lets them know. Not just people he knows, either; he cares about far more than he can possibly care about without going a little mad, which, y'know, he does and all. It's the letting them know part that counts, though, and that is why I love him.
c. He so messed up. It's like he focuses on other people to avoid dealing with what's wrong with himself, which is what fractures him in the end. He doesn't trust people, when it comes down to it, and that is a huge failing.
d. I suspect I'll find it much easier now I've read 'Like Sailing and Home Runs' or whatever that fic was called. Over identification, much?
e. Casey didn’t see Dan again until the run down meeting, tossing a kooshball back and forth with Chris and Will, grinning and joking and looking admirably normal. He presumed that was what the pat on the head from Natalie was for. Most of the meeting was spent splitting his focus between the elaborate doodle with which he was decorating the lower half of the meeting agenda and the small grin on Danny’s face, which was a little too fixed to be reassuring.

Avoidance and pretending. Yup.

f. We'll see...

Oooh, and Maturin, because I've finished the book. :D!!!!

a. ...how could you not love Rodney? I'm serious about this. He's arrogant and obnoxious and hideously bad with people and has a fluffy center, totally gets people way more than you'd think (OMG TAO) and is completely insecure. I loooooove heeeeeem. And I get him. And I love the distinctness of his mental voice because it makes him so much easier to write.
b. His intelligence. Not only because he saves everyone's lives, but because it's something that he's completely sure of and he needs that. He doesn't get people but he does get ideas and theories and that gives him a happy place. Oh, oh, and he knows his failings, which is rare. He overstates them, but he knows them.
c. The overstating of his failings. He magnifies them and feels uncertain and insecure, resulting in his retreating behind arrogance and intelligence, which makes him worse with people... poor boo.
d. WORRYINGLY EASY. I DO NOT WANT TO BE IN HIS HEADSPACE! XD
e.
“I’m sorry,” he said, not quite managing to erase all the irritation from his voice and - as a second thought, since she had a knife out now and was pulverising tomatoes - raised his hands defensively. “I’m not good at this stuff. I’ve never been good at this stuff, you know that. It’s not as though I’ve made an effort to hide it.”

She stopped chopping but didn’t turn to face him.

“Well I always hope for better.”

“But I don’t understand why. It’s not as though I’ve ever given you any basis for that.” He sighed and said, somewhat helplessly, “I’m me. I don’t know how not to be me.”

a. Honestly, I don't know. He's so open and HERE I AM about so many things that it makes you want to dig and dig at the ones that he bothers to keep hidden. Also, maddeningly attrative. Maddening, I say.
b./c. I love that you say how he doesn't get people, but that according to Tao (GAH LOVE) on some level he does and is just afraid that he's wrong. Hence, giant wall of intelligence. Which brings us back to item a. ;)
d. YOU DO. YOU KNOW YOU DO.
e. *flails* Yes.

Since you wrote him with such flair last time, I have to say: Torquil!

Date: 2007-06-16 12:11 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] villainny.livejournal.com
a. Torquil is just so utterly fabulous. He's a drama queen, and he doesn't have a heart of gold, which I love him for. He has a heart of tin that occasionally catches the light and sparkles a little. Maybe. I love him for his tantrums and his unreasonable grudges and how he completely shoots himself in the foot with them. I also love that he's arrogant and Not Very Nice and I just want to RP him so much.
b. He's childish and stroppy and rude. It's immense amounts of fun.
c. Torquil has no bad traits. Torquil needs no bad traits. Every bad trait is a quality from a different angle.
d. I have no idea, that's for other people to judge, but GOOD GOD MAN he's fun. :D
e. Not yet, except for his delight at torturing siblings.
f. GOD I WANT TO.
