André loves Skazz because Skazz is maybe the first thing in his life that he hasn't wanted to solve. Hasn't wanted to take apart and put back together and work out how and why. He's content pretty much just to watch and wonder and watch some more. He's content to ask questions and occasionally get answers and he's content for that to take as long as it takes. To take the rest of his stupid-ass life, however long that might be.

John Sheppard loves Radek Zelenka because Radek tells him exactly how and when they are screwed without pause for ego or potential (and inevitably doomed) plans to the contrary. He loves the fact that Czech sounds much the same uttered in either anger or rejoicing, completely unfamiliar, and so he has something else to worry about for the second or two of translation.

Maturin loves Aubrey... initially out of a certain sense of gratitude, as is unsurprising, but has found over time that he has more desire to spend time with Jack Aubrey than any other human being - or, indeed, any creature - that he has met. He supposes that that - along with the strange gymnastics of his stomach - must constitute love of a sort.

Gimli loved Legolas because the elf made such an effort to get past the ridiculous snobbish stuck up arrogant prissy upbringing enough to declare himself the friend of a dwarf. Not that he's bitter. Legolas loves Gimli because the man dwarf is able to charm alcohol out of almost everyone they've ever met. And because the dwarf showed him more of beauty and more types of beauty than his people have ever deigned to acknowledge in a thousand years.
