nny: (unprecedented levels of dork)

I used to write really bad Mulder/Krycek, back in the day. Ages ago, this was, writing my first fanfic about ten years ago actually. It created this whole different fannish experience that I'd never had with any show before that, see, but it wasn't from the beginning of the show that I saw it. I mean, I never watched the show in order, I wasn't allowed to stay up late enough after Girl Guides to watch the first couple of seasons, so Krycek was pretty early on in the fandom experience for me, but I didn't write fanfic before I knew what fanfic was as so many of these stories seem to go. I wrote original stories before I found out about fanfic, and they were hideous and cliché ridden and frequently ended up with it all having been a dream, which is I guess another version of the Mary Sue thing. Something that we do because we don't know how to do any better. I never wrote Mary Sues because I didn't like myself, and a lot of the attraction of slash was that I couldn't project myself into the story in any real way, which is an unhealthy reaction obviously and has totally changed over time. It's not why I'm in slash any more and that's good, because I'd hate to lose the hot man-loving in order to work out a mindset. :D

That's beside the point, anyway. Ramble. The point was that I adored the scariness and the stories and the show without any kind of slashtacular subtext, which has a different feeling of squee to that I got when, say, Krycek kissed Mulder on the cheek. (God, the uproar after that... XD) And that kind of squee - the non slashy kind - is the kind of squee that I'm getting from Supernatural. Because I don't do incest, and their relationship is complex and dependent and incredibly close because they're brothers, and that makes me happy enough. And that's not a fannish experience I've had so much for a long time, and it's interesting and cool and I think I'll settle in.

And I've got McShep for the slash, anyway. 'cos man.

Apologies for the abuse to the common comma in this post, for the record, and renewed begging for someone to come watch this damned show with me because I cannot watch it in segments of longer than five minutes without having to check my emails or get a glass of water or make a rambly post or something. And I can't watch it full screen, either. IF IT'S IN A LITTLE BOX IT CAN'T GET ME!

Sweetie, you can come watch SPN with me anytime!

There is some seriously good SPN GEN fic out there. In fact, I love it far more than any of the slash that is written for the show. I especially recommend reading everything that [livejournal.com profile] big_pink has written although, the more recent stuff is scary as fuck!

Ooh, gen fic would roll awesome. :D

I may actually take you up on that at some point. I'm currently getting [livejournal.com profile] soupytwist to let me know which ones I'm safe to watch - I'm skipping Bloody Mary until there is DAYLIGHT.

These are all tagged SPN + GEN [although for me, GEN generally means no slash so these may have some smut involved but it won't be wincest. ;)]

I am glad you have someone to talk you through the scary ones. I advise not watching Providence as that's the one that freaked me out!

That is exactly my reasoning when watching this show.

The smaller the box, the safer I am. Sometimes it's tinyweenyvision!

That's cool. I get past my incest squick by reading RPS :P and yeah, Sam and Dean really do nnot need sex to make their relationship complicated and codependent :P they're doing just fine on their own.

All I need is a little bit of desktop background to remind myself that it's got fictional borders :D

PS - [livejournal.com profile] brynnmck writes phenomenal SPN genfic. And dS fic. And HCL fic. Just go read her fic. (http://www.livejournal.com/tools/memories.bml?user=brynnmck&keyword=My+fic&filter=all)

In particular, though, Let's Play Two (http://brynnmck.livejournal.com/62879.html) is beeeautiful gen and And The Next Day Would Be Christmas (http://brynnmck.livejournal.com/79912.html) is both awesome & seasonal!

It does not surprise me that I am the bigger scaredy cat, here. I'm absolutely pathetic when it comes to scary things, seriously, but it's so much fun!

Thanks for the recommendations, I'll definitely take a look when I have time. Which... may not be for a while, 'cos I has a LOT planned for the holiday :D

That's exactly how I felt. Feel. Whatever. And I'm settled and gleeful about it. :)

I'm completely fascinated by their relationship in a different way to how I usually am. It's interesting.

And YAY for the show, it's awesome!

The size doesn't matter as much -- although I do usually have it less than fullscreened so I can do other stuff -- but the multitasking does. If I am watching something scary or suspenseful by myself, I hit the pause button so often. "La la la creeeeeeepy empty room, creeeeeepy sl-- okay pause. Refreshing email! Getting tea! --ow shot of Our Hero advancing into said empty room..." And chatting alongside it, too.

It means an episode takes about twice as long as it should, especially since I am easily distracted in general by whatever I'm doing when the episode's paused, but oh well.

I'm much better about it if I'm watching something with friends, and I don't try to irritate them all by pausing at random suspenseful intervals. Because I do not wish to be murdered mid-episode. But if I'm watching something alone, I'm a lot more susceptible to both suspense and wandering distractedly away.

And of course the multiple cups of tea also mean that there are multiple toilet trips, all to the good. In fact this reply right here is because the chair anchored safely in front of the closet door is inching across the floor and AAAAARGH!

Indeed. And then there are snacks to go with the tea, because one can't only consume beverages no matter how delicious, and so forth!

This reply is to provide you an excuse to hide from the chair. *helpful* And prove your POWER OVER IT by the fact that it has to stop moving when you tell it to.
