There was no count down and no drama and very little drunkenness, just me and Meg and J watching a film and snuggling at midnight, and it was pretty damned grand. I woke up really early this morning and lay on the air mattress next to a sleeping tropes and listened to the_oscar_cat's lovely voice reading bits and pieces of the Nantucket AU until J woke up enough that I could steal the key to the outside door and go for a walk in the fresh-laid snow.

I started the new year with a walk along the shore of Lake Michigan, my boots sinking into drifts deeper than we ever get where I live, and I wished a happy new year to a couple of random dog walkers and my hair froze which is possibly the coolest thing ever. It was beautiful and serene and I couldn't stop smiling ridiculously and dancing around and kicking through the snow, listening to Regina Spektor and Fall Out Boy and Satie, and I'm sure some day I'll grow up but right now who the hell needs it?

Good start, 2008. Keep it up.
