So how does one find out if one has a food intolerance? Is it a case of going to the doctor, or is it a case of cutting out certain foods until one seems to make a difference?

Yes, I'm an ignoramus. But I'm so cute!

Either, but generally if you have a group of likely candidates, you can cut them all out, wait a few days, and then add back one at a time (every few days also) until you get the bad response. It's a pain, though, to be really vigilant because if, for instance, you cut out wheat AND milk, then on the day you add back milk, you accidentally eat something with wheat in it, how will you know which it is?

Well.. with an intolerance, unfortunately, the best way to figure it out really is through trial and error. BUT, if it's an allergy, that can be tested for by a doctor. Intolerances mostly just make you stomach sick, whereas food allergies can also cause itching, coughing, headaches, sleepiness... etc, etc.

So either way, well, a doctor visit certainly couldn't hurt, except perhaps in the wallet area.

I visited my doctor, and he advised me on what to cut out and the time period to operate over. He was right first time too!

Dropping in via a friends’ list.

Vegetarian society has a good overview:

this one offers advice on the approach and also the rotation diet:

one thing about food intolerance that I’ve seen rarely mentioned is that often it is not cut-and-dried, you might be intolerant to lactose but, for example, but you’ll be able to manage a small amount of lactose in hard cheese but cream-rich carbonara will hurt. This makes the exclusion diet a little more complicated.

If you’ve got a good doctor, I'd say definitely have a chat with them; there are medical tests available for some of the more well known intolerances. There are even tests available at Superdrug (and in health food shops) but I’m not too sure of their validity.

It's best to start off with a food diary-keep a log of everything you eat and when you eat it and log also if you have any kind of reaction. After a couple of weeks you may see if there is any correlation between certain foods and health issues. The doctor may help with allergy tests but often they won't if they have no medical history reason for doing so (eg a severe allergic reaction) They will often ask you to keep a food journal anyway so do that before you see them and that should move them forward faster!

I think what you need to focus on first would be a gluten intolerance which can cause some of the symptoms you suffer from. I'll look further into it if you want and get back to you <3

I have an awesome cleansing diet that I'll try to get together for you; it's essentially a two week cleanse on a strict vegan diet and then you slowly add things back. But for the first two weeks you give up alcohol, sugar, dairy, caffeine, fruits and, um, meat. I know. But after awhile, you don't care because you feel so awesome! After the two week phase you slowly - slowly - add foods back.

I felt fantastic, and regrettably went off it when we went home for Christmas that year. I want to get back on it.
