Apr. 10th, 2009 12:24 pmI'm loving reading the 8 days of happy thing that everyone's doing right now. I'd do it myself, but no one's tagged me. And y'know what makes me happy? Getting tagged for memes. XD
I've made the decision to get a place by myself at the end of June, when the contract is up here. It's the first time I'll have lived on my own, so it's kind of vaguely terrifying and exciting both at once; now I just need to save up enough money to be able to manage it. And find somewhere I can afford, of course.
I don't know how to budget, is the thing. I am embarrassingly, massively bad with money, which anyone who's been around for a while will have noticed; I rarely have any, and when I do I spend it on myself and anyone in the vicinity with abandon. Don't suppose anyone knows of any good ways to keep track of money and such? I've tried an excel spreadsheet in the past, but I mostly confused myself. XD

Date: 2009-04-10 01:14 pm (UTC)Since I am never tagged for anything, I cannot pass on a tag to you, but I can give you a linkie. I have heard good things through friendsfriends about this (http://jarrow.livejournal.com/1064187.html) - I don't know anything personally, but it might be worth a look? Budgeting is something I suck at, so I'm considering giving it a try myself...

Date: 2009-04-10 02:26 pm (UTC)What I did upon moving out was find average amounts for utilities etc and make a table, to see how much rent a month I could afford, and how much I had left for groceries etc. Don't forget you get a reduction on council tax for single occupency!
I love living alone 99.9% of the time.

Date: 2009-04-10 03:38 pm (UTC)My finances aren't so much deciding how much I can spend on fun things/shoes/beer, it's seeing how short I fall in covering my mortgage and such.
I've got a spreadsheet that has columns for mortgage, water, gas, electricity, council tax, travel costs, Virgin, pets, food, and my lasek loan. Add em up - that's all my essential monthly expenditure. You might be surprised how much yours works out to! I think the easiest way to not come unstuck is to set up direct debits for those things, and arrange them to come out in the few days after payday. Then what's left is yours to play with.
I'm completely militant about my finances. Except when I'm too afraid to look. It all goes a bit downhill, then.
