WTF? It's not normal to have a slowly increasing allergy, is it? Hazelnuts and brazilnuts and walnuts I knew about, but now almonds too? This sucks. I NEED PROTEIN, OKAY? atm I'm okay with peanuts, cashews, pecans, macadamias, pine nuts and pistachios, but then again I thought I was okay with almonds and the tingling and the swelly throat says different. I POUT. I think I'm gonna have to forget about the whole vegetarian thing, if only so that the list of foods I can actually eat doesn't become absurdly short. XD

Hmph. I need some juice. And the ability to swallow.

*huffs off*

Yes, that's normal. Allergies change and grow.

Thanks for the info.

Your body treats it like poison and it learns to recognise the poison and react more strongly each time.

Eat a nut, "Poison, rar!" another nut, "Poison, RAR!", another nut, "POISON, RAR!" and so on until you die, horribly, from a tiny peanut.

You might try blanched almonds. My husband is allergic to most tree nuts but can eat hazelnuts and almonds if they are blanched. It seems that what he is actually allergic to is the skin and whatever is growing on it.

Hi! :)

Thanks, I'll give that a try.

FWIW, even if your tree nut allergies keep getting worse, you should stay okay with peanuts, because they are actually a legume. My husband could die if he ate a pecan, and any tree nut gives him issues, but he is 100% okay with peanuts!

Is it sad that I'm massively reassured by this because AT LEAST I MIGHT STILL BE ABLE TO EAT SNICKERS?

XD

Sadly that's actually quite common :( Are you allergic to seeds? Because pumpkin seed are nommmy

Nope, I eat seeds all the time. :D Gluten free, and all.

How about soy products like tofu?

*hugs*

Dude, I'm sorry you keep having to use that one with me! Someday I'll get back to posting cheery things and stop being so whinesome. XD

I eat tofu sometimes but not often; i I'm not always entirely sure how to use it. I'm more likely to go for quorn or something, even though the cost is sucky.

Er, sorry about this long tofu-related comment.

*hugs* You can post anything you want on your journal, always remember that. Don't worry about the readers. <3

Tofu is delicious! It tastes like... soy beans. (Haha, I am so obvious.) You can essentially put any sauce you like on it and it will taste like that sauce. Um, some options:

- steam it and eat it with soy sauce and green onions. Or any other savory/spicy/etc sauce you'd like, for that matter.
- cube the tofu and dump in soup, then wait for it to heat through or the soup to re-boil.
- cook it with stew
- slice and stir fry with veggies, noodles, etc.
- Tofu desserts: eat straight out of the box! Um, possibly not very healthy, though.

If the cooking method requires moving the tofu around, firmer/fried tofus survive the process more intact. I don't have any specific recipes, but I am sure places like Tasty Kitchen (http://thepioneerwoman.com/tasty-kitchen/) or Allrecipes.com (http://allrecipes.com/) may be helpful in that regard.

-I love steamed tofu with soy sauce! Or if I'm being lazy I use the microwave :P
-I also like the kind of tofu that's already pre-fried (either in blocks or in puffs) and then I just give it a quick fry in the pan to heat it up and get it crisp, add some salt, and eat it with rice and a side of veggies

But yeah, you could probably add tofu to just about anything. There's always some of the firm and medium kind at my house because we add in into so many things.

When I'm feeling lazy I'll often just take a brick of tofu, boil it for a while, cut it up into small pieces, and mix it up with curry powder. Then put it with some pasta or something and mixed vegetables.

Whole thing takes under ten minutes and is surprisingly tasty. :D

My sister is massively allergic to almonds in particular, so I'd be careful and not push your luck, especially since sweet almond oil is used in loads of stuff (including things like Johnson's Baby Shampoo, because it's considered to be hypoallergenic...) :( *hugs*

Btw I have a nut-allergic vegan aunt! If you want to stay veggie, I could ask her for tips? xx

I'd really appreciate that! It's the intersection with the gluten intolerance that makes it the most difficult - a lot of veggie alternatives have wheat in. :/

I think I'm gonna have to forget about the whole vegetarian thing, if only so that the list of foods I can actually eat doesn't become absurdly short.

Frankly, this would be prudent. You've already got a gluten problem, right? You *really* need to keep your remaining food options as open as possible.

I'm gonna look into it, list the foods I can and can't eat, and see what happens. Frankly I'm not a strict vegetarian anyway, and it's more convenience and budget than morals, but it'd feel odd to give it up. XD

I'm vegetarian and tree-nut allergic! Legumes are your friends. Well, okay, they're my friends -- I know they bother some people's digestion, but I always feel better when I eat them. Black beans, lentils, pinto beans, what have you. They're tasty with many different sorts of spice combinations, they make good soup, and they're not particularly hard to cook from scratch if you remember to soak them.

Also, alas, I must second the "nut allergies get worse over time" thing. Mine have gone from a minor annoyance to a big reaction if I even look at a walnut. *sigh*

I do eat a lot of beans, but with the gluten intolerance too it cuts down on a hell of a lot of what I can eat. I'm going to look into it, try and put together a list of foods that won't make me sick, but it's just an additional bother. Makes it really difficult to eat 'round friends' houses, and go to catered meals and stuff. I hate feeling like a pain. XD

Oh, I hear you. Also, it's possible to be "mostly vegetarian" or just a casual meat-eater, eating meat socially but not necessarily at home. I have no personal experience with the gluten thing, but I imagine that's socially very hard, too, as wheat is everywhere. :(

I'm afraid that's exactly how allergies develop :( have some anti-histamines on you as it sounds as though it's getting quite bad. Remember peanuts and pine nuts aren't NUTS so they should remain fine. But I would recommend giving up other nuts because if you develop a more serious allergy over time you'll have to avoid traces, whereas if you prevent it from getting to that stage by avoiding them you won't need to worry about traces.

This is an excellent point.

...it also SUCKS.

My pout is bigger than my face, at this point. XD

Thanks for the advice.

Absolutely true, and I totally agree. I'm just sulky - cancelled my graze boxes because I'm not interested in only seedy things, that sort of thing. Sick of my body failing me - doesn't help that the arthritic ouchies have come back this weekend. :/

Pout away - it's RUBBISH. Bloody bodies. I have PMS and the past 3 months this has involved a terrible - and untreatable with all known painkillers - headache. 10 years since I started my periods and I'm still getting NEW monthly horrors *sulks as well*
