This is a really interesting article about adoption in the wake of the Haiti earthquake. Mostly it makes me facepalm massively and point people in the direction of various children's charities. It's also interesting because I've been considering fostering for a while - when I'm a bit older, and a bit more settled - focusing particularly on UASC (that's Unaccompanied Asylum Seeking Children, by the way). I'm not sure I could cope with everything that's associated with it, but at the same time there's the fact that I would be helping kids who have more difficulty finding help because the cuteness factor has worn out, for them. Y'know?

You can tell I'm cynical lately, right? Don't even get me started on celebrities and adoption...

Nothing much to say beyond giving a huge hand to the prospect of caring for teenagers/older children. Yes. Yes.

That's a really interesting article. You can't believe the gall of some people (and you know if the child's family were found they'd refuse to give them back because of the "financial investment"). If it wasn't hideously cruel to the child I'd want them to actually adopt so in five years time they could see why everyone was telling them not to.

A friend of mine's adopted, in as close to an ideal way as possible (as a baby, same colour/culture/country, etc), though his birth parents are alive and he's met them now. Considering how messed up being adopted has made him, I can't imagine what it would be like to be adopted as an older child by someone with nothing in common with you, knowing there's a good chance your family are alive.
