Can't seem to find it anywhere-

man is halfway between apes and angels

(or something along those lines)

Is that familiar to anyone? Anyone have any idea who said it?

Any help'd be much appreciated.

is this what you're looking for?

"The word sinner is a theological designation. It is essential to insist on this. It is not a moralistic judgment. It is not a word that places humans somewhere along a continuum ranging from angel to ape, assessing them a relatively 'good' or 'bad'. It designates humans in relation to God and sees them separated from God. Sinner means something is awry between humans and God."

See above - also, Desmond Morris (author of The Naked Ape) said something along the lines of "I see man not as a fallen angel, but as a rising ape." Does that help at all?

A Google search brings up that is a general medieval sentiment - and the way the middle ages were about authorship, let alone authenticity or copyright (totally nonexistent concepts), we probably have to be content with it.

There's also a PTerry quote along those lines, somewhere in _Hogfather_ .... Oh, here it is, the Annotated Pratchett File (http://www.co.uk.lspace.org/books/apf/hogfather.html):

>>+ [p. 270] "TO BE THE PLACE WHERE THE FALLING ANGEL MEETS THE RISING APE."

Desmond Morris, in The Naked Ape: "I viewed my fellow man not as a fallen angel, but as a risen ape." However, Terry says that he was unaware of this prior use.<<
