Can't seem to find it anywhere-

man is halfway between apes and angels

(or something along those lines)

Is that familiar to anyone? Anyone have any idea who said it?

See above - also, Desmond Morris (author of The Naked Ape) said something along the lines of "I see man not as a fallen angel, but as a rising ape." Does that help at all?
