Jul. 12th, 2010 04:24 pmI've just read Toft's Mythbusters apocalypse fic In Search Of and wow. The writing was gorgeous, the emotions were intense and real, it scared the crap out of me and made me cry in the good way. I'm half way between terrified and in awe.
I don't know why I didn't remember how much apocalypse stories freak me out, though. When I was a littler peanut I used to read all the time, accidentally stealing 72 books from my school because I got through them too fast to remember about things like returning them. And some I remember, absolutely; I remember Diana Wynne Jones and Lois Duncan and L.J.Smith, and getting faintly freaked out by the mole sex in Duncton Wood, but it hadn't struck me before now how well I'd remembered the apocalypse stories. Plague 99, and John Wyndham, and Z for Zachariah which was possibly the one that scared the hell out of me first.
I think it's tied in to the way that it's always scariest when it's just the regular humans doing the evil things on supernatural shows, y'know?
