From a reading for my course:

The avatar is like a Rorschach inkblot, or the Draw-a-House/Person/Tree Test, or any work of art. It is selected from personal imagination. Consciously or unconsciously, people condense a multitude of meaning into it. They project their personality into it - who they are, who they wish to be, what they fear, what moves them.

So here's an idea. Choose one of your icons, and post it up in your journal. Then ask people to comment with the first thing that comes to mind when they see that icon- whether it's associated with the image, the text, or with the identity/mood they project on you when you're using it, whatever. Free association. See if anything fits.

I'm gonna have to put up my new default, 'cos it makes me happy.

I'm big with the memes tonight. Can you tell I have homework to do? *g*

"The psychology of avatars and graphical space in multimedia chat communities or, how I learned to stop worrying and love my palace props." (http://www.rider.edu/~suler/psycyber/psyav.html) Kind of specific to a multimedia chatroom called the Palace, but has some interesting avatar theory.

Also try Multimedia performance in a computer-mediated community: Communication as a virtual drama." (http://www.ascusc.org/jcmc/vol9/issue4/soukup.html) Same advantages and disadvantages as above. Hope that helps!
