Jun. 6th, 2005 07:52 amThis is just... the perfect Good Omens fic, in my opinion. It's subtle, and so very canon-based, and sad without being angsty. More... subtly wistful. And yet not, quite. There's happiness and friendship in there too. Short and lovely, and I'm just so glad I've read it. So I think you should too.

Date: 2005-06-06 11:42 am (UTC)Aaw, thankee.
I have a number of Aziraphales in my head, personally; my Aziraphael, much as I'd like him to be, is not a patch on the book Aziraphale.

Date: 2005-06-06 01:50 pm (UTC)Speaking of the poety, have you seen Auden's "Postscript (Ariel to Caliban. Echo by the Prompter)"? I stumbled across it this past weekend and ralized that Milliways may have eaten my brain. To the extent that I was indignant that someone was conflating Crowley and Caliban. And then realized that someone was me. Doh.

Here you are...
Date: 2005-06-07 12:23 am (UTC)(ARIEL to Caliban. Echo by the PROMPTER)
Weep no more but pity me,
Fleet persistent shadow cast
By your lameness, caught at last,
Helplessly in love with you,
Eligance, art, fascination,
Fascinated by
Drab mortality;
Spare me a humiliation,
To your faults be true:
I can sing as you reply
. . . I
Wish for nothing lest you mar
The perfection in these eyes
Whose entire devotion lies
At the mercy of your will;
Tempt not your sworn comrade, --only
As I am can I
Love you as you are--
For my company be lonely
For my health be ill:
I will sing if you will cry
. . . I
Never hope to say farewell,
For our lethargy is such
Heaven's kindness cannot touch
Nor earth's frankly brutal drum;
This was long ago decided,
Both of us know why,
Can, alas, foretell,
When our falsehoods are divided,
What we shall become,
One evaporating sigh
. . I
-W.H. Auden
(So, not so much the first stanza, but the second two. Aaaaaaand.... I can't make the indents take, but the 6th, 7th, and 9th lines of each are indented, and the "...I" echoes are justified right in the text.)

Date: 2005-06-07 04:40 am (UTC)Out of interest, however did you come across milliways if you have no livejournal? The idea that we have watchers boggles my mind, a little, partly because it must be such a challenge to follow.
Re: Here you are...
Date: 2005-06-07 01:50 pm (UTC)I do not, in any way, follow the whole thing. I am vastly uninterested in huge swaths of characters, but I love witty banter and mythological playfulness, so I'm quite taken with the A/C interaction.
There are longer answers I could make, but that's the bare bones of it.
