So the doctor told me I should really lose some weight, which is no news to me; I'm not obese, but I could definitely stand to get rid of a number of pounds. I've already made an involuntary start on it, which might even continue since conflict cripples me and makes me entirely unable to eat, but I have to turn it into more of an active thing. And active really is the operative word; I genuinely don't eat all that much, I just don't move either. That's part of what comes of having much of your social world on your computer, you see.

So I've looked into the opening times of the local swimming pool, and I've looked at the times scheduled for adult lane swimming and...

6:30 to 9:00 am?!

... well shit.

Can I take the executive decision to remain fat, rather than give up Thursday mornings in bed?

*sighs*

I'm waiting until the weather gets a little warmer, at least.

Yes, you can make that executive decision. And, while I am currently coming up on 40 pounds lost since November 18, so I can say this from a position of having needed to and still needing to lose weight, I also can promise you that if your heart isn't in it, it isn't the right time for you. It isn't like my doctor, my mother, and everyone else hasn't been telling me for ten years I needed to do this; it's that at this time, I became ready to do it. Also, I am, please believe me, in no position to judge anyone on this topic, and I am not judging you.

Also, you can make the executive decision to start with really small incremental changes. Changes like, on purpose, every day, get up and walk back and forth for five minutes in your home. What? you say. That is not exercise!

That is exercise, and is also the beginning of a habit--if you can do that at 2 or 5 or whatever every day, then it will be less of a hard thing later to choose to take that walk outside, to make it ten minutes, to see how far you can get in five minutes before you turn and come back, and so on.

Tiny positive changes are still changes, and are still positive.

...That's ridiculous.

*pokes your local swimming pool*

But swimming is FUN.

Ugh, that's not pleasant or right. (myself, I have acquired a skipping rope from a boxing supplies store. There's a concrete strip directly behind my house. It's sunny. There's no reason for me not to be exercising ...)

Actually, speaking as someone who's both lifeguarded early morning lap swimming and done it herself, you would be surprised how pleasant it is. I used to specifically request the lap-swimmers shift because it's very quiet and peaceful in the pool area at that time of the morning -- no small children making noise or splashing or running about, no large groups of people being obnoxious by chasing each other around. Yes, it's stupidly early, but it really does feel good for the rest of the day.

I'll always remember a lovely woman who came in the early mornings before she went to work at a hospice. She had to have a pager on her at all times in case something happened to one of her patients, and I used to keep an eye on the pager for her by keeping it beside my chair when I was watching the swimmers. She was always grateful for it and never failed to wish me a happy day when she left. ^_^

But consider it in this light.

Think of all the shit you could get done if you get up that early. :F

Well! How about... going to swim from, say, 8:15-9:00, or something, and then going back home to finish your sleep if you need it?

Swimming is great exercise, and I've always found it really relaxing. It also tires me out in that really satisfying way.

When you're ready -- and only when you're ready -- consider joining us in [livejournal.com profile] fanaticize. I have not voluntarily exercized for about three years, but now I'm walking -- or at strolling -- for 20 minutes on the treadmill every day. It's not a big deal, but it's a start.

I myself couldn't commit to swimming several times a week because change-into-swimsuit, cold-shower, cold-pool, cold-shower-and-wash-hair, dry-off-and-get dressed is all just so not me.
