There's a show about finding the new Maria for Sound of Music, and the contact embarrassment is back in control. It's making me cringe, even from the other room. It hurts us, precious.

I dunno. Do you think it's remiss of parents to convince people they have talent when they don't? I have caught X-Factor auditions and the like before and I've seen people putting their heart and soul into performances and just not being any good, but being absolutely convinced that they're the best thing since sliced bread. Is it better that they have that confidence without foundation, and proceed to get the stuffing entirely knocked out of them? Is that better than talent unused through lack of confidence? I don't know.

I reckon Aziraphale's watching this, though, with a quite unholy amount of glee.

*winces* I'm soooo not watching that. Ever.

It's even worse because I considered actually auditioning. Perhaps out of some kind of residual self-hate or something. I mean, ow.

Oooh, man, I'm glad you didn't. This is cruel. Thank god I don't have the range for Maria, 'cos singing is about the only thing I'm willing to admit that I can do.

I miss choirs. What I really want to do is sing a) Thomas Tallis and b) folk. And I have no bloody clue where to look for this sort of thing. XD

I think it is a bit cruel, but in the parents's defense--reality TV didn't exist when they were raising these kids. As far as they knew at the time, the worst that might happen is a bit of overconfidence in karaoke situations.

lol I watched some of that show at M's. It was extremely cringe-inducing, reminded me of school in places. So much pretentiousness...

Anyways, you may find this entertaining (mildly, at least): Line dancing fish (http://http://video.yahoo.com/video/play?vid=8e4db9b9f33b22abab54ec1f5fcb3791.636945&cache=1/)

Ow. Now that is a really tough question. Obviously it would be better for the parents to instead encourage the child in something s/he is good at. But parents are also prejudiced, and likely to see talent that isn't really there.
