Weird request: Please could you link to or comment with a picture of your favourite flower?

My flower knowledge is seriously lacking, and people ask me what my favourite flower is and I have no idea. I used to say daisies but it's not them, really; I love passion flowers because they're weird and gorgeous, but I can't decide on a favourite if I have no idea what I'm talking about, right? Plus the thought of a bunch of flowers in post comments makes me happy.

...it makes sense in my head. :D

Bird of Paradise (http://byandlarge.net/scuttlebutt/images/neighbourhood/bird-of-paradise.jpg)

They even show up in the Hellogy despite being a Central American species!

...oh, wow. That's really odd. It looks like it ought to be on the set of sc-fi. :D!

Whoop, never mind. They appear to be South African. Can you tell I'm not a botanist?

Certainly makes for an interesting situation in the Hellogy. I wonder if I can argue that they were picked up from friendly indiginous groups or merchants by ships returning from the Indian Ocean? (LONG story there, HUGE wars with India and several African regions.)

Always this.

They grow wild in my parents' yard. They smell so nice when you get a big bouquet.

My personal favourites:

http://jrroses.com/images/black_magic.jpg Black Magic roses, which when you actually hold them look absolutely unreal, as if they're made of red velvet.

http://psjk.homestead.com/files/Gladioli.jpg Gladioli, because they're weird. :D

http://www.dynamiteservice.com/paradise.jpg Birds of paradise. Mum hates them but they grew in our front yard when I was wee and I like them.

the birds of paradise are definitely dramatic. I like the gladioli! I shall have to look out for them.

While it is not so much a favourite flower, I feel obliged to link it anyway, considering it's my namesake.

(Yes, the plant. They named me after the plant, not the French word or its even more depressing English counterpart.)

Thalictrum rochebrunianum, or the meadow rue. (http://pics.davesgarden.com/pics/go_vols_1020275444_296.jpg)

Oh, that's pretty. I'd rather have been named after a flower than a town. My first name's a town, my surname's a river. There's just nothing elegant about being geography.

Hmm, either Orchids (http://www.judithkmcmillan.com/images/16x20/16x20-Paphiopedlium%20(Paph%20Orchid)%201999%20reduced_web.jpg) or Cherry Blossoms (http://www.madlantern.com/art/images/photos/cherry-blossoms.jpg).

What, you thought the username was a random choice? *grins* I generally prefer trees to flowers. Although I adore the way jasmine (http://www.life.uiuc.edu/ib/363/image/jasmin2.jpg) and honeysuckle (http://www.photo-seller.com/PhotoAlbums/Flowers/Honeysuckle.jpg) smell. Mmmmm. Carnations (http://www.johnstoa.co.uk/anna's%20garden/border%20carnations.jpg), too - they're almost spicy.

I gotta go with the Gerberas, too. It's not particularly original, but they come in SO MANY COLORS. I love to see tons of different colored ones all in a bunch. They are so vibrant - and almost annoyingly cheerful. ;)

I've been fond of Cala Lilies (http://www.angelfire.com/scary/crooked_halo/comichaiku/cala2.bmp) since they were mentioned in the TV show Quantum Leap back in the early 90's. They're simple and elegant, with snow white blossoms on very long stems.

I also love Gardenias (http://leon.ifas.ufl.edu/garden1.jpg), which are another simple white flower. Gardenias grow on bushes with dark green leaves, and have absolutely the most gorgeous fragrance in the world.

When I was young and went out to dances and other such events, I always preferred Orchids (http://www.billyandmark.com/assets/images/double_orchid_satin_background_1.jpg), especially purple ones. As opposed to my other favorites, I love orchids for their complexity and delicacy. Although there is a shade of purple called orchid, orchids actually come in quite a range of colours. I think white might be most common.
