Feb. 26th, 2007 04:50 pmI was talking to
liz666 a couple of days ago about how my mum doesn't discuss sanitary towels. She doesn't talk about periods or sex, either, although every now and again she'll make a joke that'll have me coming out with a high pitched MUM! I think it's squeam rather than prudishness - I just happened to mention that I was a bit snotty and she flailed and told me that for heaven's sake she was cooking.
It tallies with what I was thinking about yesterday, though, so I'll neatly segue in a completely seamless fashion that you won't notice. :D
What I was wondering was who TMI cuts are for. A lot of people on my f-list cut mention of periods and suchlike, and I just wondered who needed saving. I don't mean to sound a)self-righteous or b)accusing, since I am well aware that I am far more open on my journal than a lot of people, and that my comfort threshold is a lot more forgiving than many. I talk about anything on my journal that I would talk about in real life, frankly, and sometimes more; I talk on my journal as though I've had a couple of drinks and loosened my inhibitions a little. I just wondered, really, who you're thinking of when you cut - the poor unfortunate males on your f-list, the squeamish, the RL folken? For that matter, what do you cut? Talk of menstruation? Illnesses? Sex?
I suspect there is something of the attention seeking ten-year-old still lurking within me. You know, the part of you that still enjoys peeling off sunburned skin, picking at scabs, doing really loud burps and prodding at a new piercing when it goops. *grins*
Basically, I will talk about pretty much anything people ask me about, sometimes far louder than is appropriate. What this means is that when I do the ask me anything meme I very rarely get asked anything, since everyone knows pretty much everything there is to know. (I talk too much.)
For the record, then: If you want to know anything about me, at any time, feel free to ask. I may refuse to answer, although it's exceeding rare, but I will never be upset by the asking.

Date: 2007-02-26 05:38 pm (UTC)I sometimes put very long rambly journal entries behind a cut, because a few people on my friends list have made it clear that they appreciate that when they skim. See, this is me scratching my head in an oblivious manner. It takes that extra click to read it and if you want to read it you have to click it, so why not just see it? But these are people whose time I respect, so I'll sometimes do that. I might put spoilerish stuff behind a cut. Sometimes if I have a fic or piece of a fic, I'll put it behind a cut in case people don't have the least inclination to burrow through my writing. That's fair.
I don't think I've ever done the ask me anything meme. I suppose I've always assumed if people want to know something about me they'll just take it upon themselves to ask away with reckless abandon.

Hmm. I don't see it as a question of saving, just some people -- female and male -- don't like to think about bodily functions, and since it's not typical of my journal content I feel as if they deserve some warning of what's coming up.
I think it's just a question of cutting unexpected things people may find unpleasant, unless you have a reason not to -- in your journal, nothing much is unexpected so by my standards you don't need to cut anything, whereas in my journal bodyparts, angst and ramble are all generally cut.

Date: 2007-02-27 01:26 am (UTC)Mostly, I will tell people anything. :D However, in real life I do have several squeamish friends, so I guess I assume that an online FList would the same; so I try to refrain from talking about the sorts of things that commonly squick people.
When I was sick, though? I noticed that there was, in fact, one thing I do NOT discuss with anyone, and that is fecal matter/bowel movements. Not even with doctors, by preference. I don't think this is a matter of "Ewwww, gross!" so much as it is denial/pride (I don't have such base things! Never!), but perhaps there's a bit of squick involved, too (I emphatically don't want to hear about anyone else's solid matter excretion, either).
Periods, pee, blood, scabs, disgusting tactile experiences, rotten food, gross jobs... all of that, I'm fine with. I tend to only LJ-cut for "internal matters", though -- blood, excretion, or gory wounds/surgery sorts of things.
