Salazar Slytherin had been one of the most powerful wizards of his day; arguably the most powerful. (Everything was “arguably” in those days. Gryffindor loved a fight). Yet all he had to show for it now was a reviled school house and a portrait in the common room. What kind of reward was an empty portrait?

Except for the days when it wasn’t empty. The days that there was another who lurked in the background until the room was deserted and there was no one to see. The days when the founder of Gryffindor was conspicuously absent from his painting…
