Every time he thought about it, it was like a lump in his chest was fighting to get out. Strangling him. He couldn’t move, couldn’t speak, couldn’t even breathe. Time was moving along as usual, but he wasn’t. He was still in the chamber, running towards the archway, calling out his name…

Nothing in the world had colour. No colour existed without Black.

And nobody seemed to notice. His eyes were dry. That was all they saw.

He felt like the shattered pieces of himself were hidden in the bottom of his school trunk, next to a broken, silent mirror.

He watched the other man pull the tattered robes around himself, drawing them in like shreds of the dignity he had lost

At my hands! What have I done?

He pulled himself to his feet and tried to say something … there was nothing to say. Apologise? It was too late for apologies, and Snape wouldn’t listen. He didn’t deserve to be listened to.

The other man walked away, and though it must have hurt him so much, he didn’t falter.

I would have faltered.

The Potter brat had been up to his old tricks again. Gillyweed had gone missing from his stores, directly after a seventh year DADA lesson concerning the legends of the secrets concealed in the giant squid’s trove. Sometimes, he thought he would throttle that boy.

Perhaps he’d get lucky, and Potter would throttle him.

It wasn’t like that. It hadn’t been like that for years. Not that he didn’t miss it… he just thought that Sirius needed a little more time before he was ready.

Sirius knelt between his legs, and he started to comb through the tangled hair, carefully picking knots apart with his fingers, his face reflecting every wince. Eventually the hair was smooth again, and he brushed a hand over it lightly. He looked down, and met Sirius’ eyes… He started to lean forward.

“Harry’s in trouble!” Snape’s voice.

“Later.” Softly. There was a promise in Sirius’ eyes.
