Over on punctuators, there's a little discussion on American vs. British spellings/grammar in Brit based fics.

Got me thinking.

Mom for mum. NOOOOOOOO!

Candy for sweets. And, leading on from that, when American sweets are used as Dumbledore's password. I can accept that he might have muggle sweets, especially old-fashioned British ones. Y'know, the ones in huge jars that are measured out in brass scales. But twinkies? No.

We don't say "jocks". We don't really have a word for it, at least not one that I can think of. Quidditch players are really not jocks.

Noticeably American insults. I mean, a lot of them are interchangable, at least in Muggle households, because of an influx of American media. But I prefer them (especially Purebloods) to use British insults. Like "wanker" or "tosser". They make me happy. =)(side note... git is not the only British insult...)

That's all I can think of off the top of my head. Oh, and please understand, I am not in any way trying to insult American writers here. I'm sure I've annoyed many Americans with my Britifed X-Files fic. Just a pet peeve. =)

Not to mention there's stacks of fandom resources for keeping your fics free of Americanisms. And it's not hard to find yourself a Britpicker.

Yes, yes, but if CW-verse Harry called Sev a wanker/tosser, Sev would look at him and say, "I see, Mister Potter. I thought we had already agreed that I am not, in fact, a wanker. After all, that's what you're for, isn't it?" And then the whole situation would just go straight to porn Hell.

*grin* Sorry. Just attached to the git in this case. *huggles Sev*flees curses*

*beats to death people who use things like "Baby Ruth" as a Dumbledore password*does it again to people who feed characters Smarties not filled with chocolate*stuffs self on American Smarties anyway 'cause they're nummy*

Are there American Smarties? What are they like?

Little yummy discs of sugar, artificial colour, and flavours not technically found in nature. You get I think about sixteen per little penny-counter-type roll. (I miss penny candy counters. *wistful sigh*) The Smarties are gorgeous. I think http://www.smarties.com is the company website.

I'm slightly biased, but that's because I wrote the company twice in my youth, telling them how awesome their stuff was, and both times they sent me, like, three pounds of assorted sugar. Mom certainly had to scrape me off the ceiling those days. *eg* (The Whitman's chocolate company sent me a free sampler once, too, hee! Oh, no, not a Slytherin. Not a Slytherin at all.)

Now I've never seen those. I infinitely prefer our Smarties to M&Ms. I don't eat lollies, really, but I like Smarties.

They're like M&Ms, only nicer. Less sickly. And flatter, smaller, and different colours.

Am I the only one who finds 'Mars bar' to be an extremely suggestive password?

Oh, ok.
