Over on punctuators, there's a little discussion on American vs. British spellings/grammar in Brit based fics.

Got me thinking.

Mom for mum. NOOOOOOOO!

Candy for sweets. And, leading on from that, when American sweets are used as Dumbledore's password. I can accept that he might have muggle sweets, especially old-fashioned British ones. Y'know, the ones in huge jars that are measured out in brass scales. But twinkies? No.

We don't say "jocks". We don't really have a word for it, at least not one that I can think of. Quidditch players are really not jocks.

Noticeably American insults. I mean, a lot of them are interchangable, at least in Muggle households, because of an influx of American media. But I prefer them (especially Purebloods) to use British insults. Like "wanker" or "tosser". They make me happy. =)(side note... git is not the only British insult...)

That's all I can think of off the top of my head. Oh, and please understand, I am not in any way trying to insult American writers here. I'm sure I've annoyed many Americans with my Britifed X-Files fic. Just a pet peeve. =)

They're like M&Ms, only nicer. Less sickly. And flatter, smaller, and different colours.
