So. What are the pairings that are wrong, but SO RIGHT? Pairings that just make SO MUCH DAMNED SENSE but just... nrgh.

Like, say...

Dumbledore/Willy Wonka

or

Lumiere/the Pixar lamp

or

Sinfest!God/Sinfest!Devil.

Well, if we're going to do strict analogies, we get Eustace/Paul the Apostle...

Oh, indeed. Scales from the flesh/scales from the eyes, and all. Only poor Eustace had to keep his original and unfortunate name.

Don't worry- I've done that enough times before. Nothing more worrying than seeing Walden Macnair pontificating on a person's lovelife...

Hmm. I want a big list of analogies of Narnian characters. Sure, there are all the obvious ones, but who's Puddleglum meant to be?!

Hehe. Hmmm. Piglet/Nelson, of Animal Farm fame...

And not forgetting Owl/Hedwig, and Winnie-the-Pooh/Rupert Bear.

HAHAHA. Um. That is an excellent question. It's been rather a while since I've read Silver Chair (isn't that the one he's in?), but off the top of my head...he kinda reminds me of Eli, mentor to the prophet Samuel. Discerning the calls, leading the young charge(s) on a journey, whether literal or spiritual.

...you probably weren't actually serious, were you. < /religious history geek>

:D

I was semi-serious. I'm probably not as big a religious history geek as you (unless you start in on medieval religion...) but I like to make the analogies.

The thing is, a lot of the characters are symbols of types rather than individuals, so Edmund isn't just Judas but representative of all sinners, whilst a lot of the Silver Chair is more on the lines of Pilgrim's Progress or Piers Ploughman than a Biblical parallel. Which makes things trickier.

True, very true. You're quite right, Lewis does love his archetypal characters, regardless of what source they're drawing from.

Hmmm. I can see I'm going to have to ponder this further...

I think Sinfest!Handpuppet!God/Jim Henson would be intriguing.

You KNOW Jim Henson would do a better job at it...:D

I ave this wrong and immoral image in my head now.

Of the whole cliche of "let me show you how to do it by getting Exceedingly Close".

Jim Henson's arm slipping around Sinfest!God's waist, softly, tenderly whispering instructions in Kermit's voice...

God. I disgust myself.

I'm not sure if it's true love (for one thing, if Anne's paired with Dream, what happens to the Anne/Diana?), but she's definitely one of his people.

You know Dumbledore would only suck Wonka's Willy in exchange for sweets. It wouldn't be true love - although they are both evil and inclined to kill children...
